SambaFrog
14th March 2010

It's amazing watching the developmental process in small children. Miss 18 months has recently started to move in time to music and it's a real hip wiggle. We call it the 'groovy dance' and may be paving the way for her future interests. A future SYTYCD contestant?
It's amazing how early children can make the connection between music and movement.
SambaFrog holds Music and Movement classes for children 2-5 years called 'Mini Movers and Shakers'. It is a music appreciation and ability class taught in a fun way by experienced teachers. Classes are customised to this specific age group and introduce kids to a vast array of musical instruments, rhythms and music. The class also are exposed to listening to music from different cultures as well as singing in foreign languages.
The classes are held in Merewether Heights and are run on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays at 9.30am or 10.30am and run for approximately 45 minutes.
SambaFrog are currently enrolling for Term 2 which will start on Monday 19th April to Monday 21st June . The cost for the term is $90 for the nine week class.
If you would like to find out more about the 'Mini Movers and Shakers' class for toddler and pre-schoolers, go to www.sambafrog.com.au or phone 4963 1678.

PCYC
11th March 2010
.jpg)
These days when enrolling your child in a particular activity or sport, you have to be sure that it is a safe environment.
The PCYC (Police and Community Youth Clubs) is about kids doing fun activities in a safe place. PCYC gives young people a range of choices such as a place to relax, hang out with friends, get involved in a team sport or any of the activities that are run. There are 59 clubs in NSW, each with their own range of organised activities including sports, dancing, band nights, music, digital photography and lots more.
The PCYC also teaches and encourages young people to be leaders through many skills they learn in each of the organised activities.
PCYC is the leading agency in the reduction and prevention of crime by and against young people. So teaching self protection and building personal values and respect is so important.
Becoming a member of the PCYC entitles your child to attend the activities and use of the facilities of any PCYC in NSW. Membership forms will need to be completed and cost approximately $10 for a Junior Membership which will expire on the 31st December. All activities provided by the PCYC will incur additional costs.
For further information on your local PCYC go to;
Newcastle PCYC will also be conducting a full day of activities each day of the school holidays.

Myuna Bay Kids Camps
10th March 2010

I have to admit that when my friends say they are going camping for the weekend I tend to cringe at the thought of getting back to nature. I have never really ever been a camping girl even as a child because of the bugs!
School camps resulted in faking illness to get sent home, plus school day trips to the bush was never something to look forward to. I think I stressed myself out of the tales about the leeches to the point that I filled my socks and shoes with salt to avoid the dreaded blood sucking parasite. NB: I was the only student who didn't come home with leeches that day.
I think these experiences have instilled in me that "prevention is better than cure", a motto that I still believe in today.
Now if your child is NOT like me (has an aversion to nature and bugs) and would love to meet new friends whilst enjoying the great outdoors, NSW Sport and Recreation hold several kids camps across the year and one that is local to Newcastle is at Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre.
NSW Sport and Recreation action packed kid's holiday camps are run by experienced and well-qualified instructors. They aim to teach children social living skills, experience challenging activities, develop self-esteem and make new friends. The activities included in the camps depend upon the age, experience and weather. Planned activities may include; archery, canoeing/kayaking, sailing, rock climbing, flying fox, abseiling, bushwalking, cookout, team sports and craft.
This April school holidays there are several camps organised at Myuna Bay that your child may be interested in if they are aged 7-14 years. Four and five day camps include, Surf's Up, Kreative Kids, Adventure Camp and Hooked on Fishing. Most of the camps cut off date for booking is around the 22nd March so if this is something of interest head to http://www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/ for more information on how to enrol.

Sporty Kids
2nd March 2010

I have a four year old nephew who stands on the sideline watching his brother train for soccer and is desperate to play too. He said to his mother the other day "I wish I could play soccer" and now thanks to Sporty Kids, he too has an opportunity to join in the fun with their 'Soccer Tots' program.
Sporty Kids offer sports programs aimed at pre-schoolers through to primary school age children.
Their goal is to make sport accessible to everyone and get kids with all abilities outside, active and having fun.
There are a range of different pre-school programs to choose from including;
- Soccer Tots- For kids aged 3-5 years and is a fantastic introduction to soccer and give kids the skills and knowledge prior to playing in the small sided competitions.
- Ball Games- Learn the basics of throwing, kicking, catching, passing through a fun and creative variety of ball games.
- Grooves- is a fun session that includes dancing and singing to children's favourite nursery rhymes and songs. It's a great chance for kids to mix with others and burn off some energy.
There are also a range of primary school, high school and adult programs that focus around team multi-sports and soccer development.
One of the best things about the program is that you can start anytime!
If you want to try Sporty Kids but not too sure where to start, why not book into their School Holiday program over Easter to get a feel for what your child may be interested in.
To find a program and session in your area, go to www.sportykids.net.au to look at the current timetable and pricing.

Borders-Mums and Bubs

If you are looking for a one on one activity with your little one whilst meeting other mums, Borders Mums and Bubs group may be the place for you.

Do Re Mi Music
14th February 2010

Just like 'Justine Clarke', my four year old daughter likes to sing!
She has a repertoire of songs she knows the words or chorus to including Aladdin's "A Whole New World", The Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling" and Duffy's "Stepping Stone" which is quite funny listening to a four year singing about how she will not be used as a stepping stone and oblivious to the true meaning of the song.
She was introduced to a music class around two but she decided she wanted to try ballet (which she now doesn't want to do) so had to give up music. I am now thinking of re-enrolling her back in music but which class will be right for her "musical talent"?
'Do Re Mi' Music has a program for children 0-8+ years that offers enjoyable group music lessons based on the educational, social, emotional and physical needs of your child. Children will explore beat, rhthym, melody and dynamics across a variety of music styles. While having fun singing, dancing and playing instruments, they will be developing other learning skills such as memory, language, problem solving, group participation and self confidence.
The Australian based wholistic program is taught by highly trained music teachers (affiliated with Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia) who will tailor lessons to meet the interests and needs of each group. Julie Logan who holds a Master of Early Childhood education, B.Ed (Primary music), and a DIP Teach (Special Education) runs the program in Newcastle. It has been extremely popular with Newcastle families for many years limiting spaces in the 0-5 pre-school group.
However, if your child is aged 8-12 years and they like to sing, Julie has started a children's choir that develops good vocal technique and includes a varied program of singing games and performance. A simple audition is required.
For more information or to enquire about the Do Re Mi Music programs that are available phone Julie or Kay on 4963 2026.

Surfing Mums
11th February 2010
.jpg)
If you have an interest outside of your children you are lucky. If you can combine your interest with your children, this is an added bonus, as it gives you more opportunities to participate in your interest more often.
Surfing Mums Inc. is one such group that allows you to enjoy some "me time" whilst socialisiing with other mums and kids. Surfing Mums Incorporated is a network of women who love to surf and are also mums. There are a number of groups set up by Surfing Mums across Australia and Internationally that get together to build relationships with other mums and their kids while also have the opportunity to catch a wave or two.
Surfing Mums Inc. was set up by two Byron Bay mums Vanessa and Julia who found the secret of having children and also being able to enjoy their love of surfing. Vanessa and Julia set up a partnership where one mum would watch two children on the beach whilst the other would have a 30 minute surf and visa versa. This arrangement worked so well that they couldn't keep this secret from other mums who liked to surf, so Surfing Mums Inc. was formed.
The actual group meet once a week, fortnightly or once a month and this is just a time to catch up on surfing news and share some stories of your month and if the surf is good, they may get some waves in too while the kids play with their new found friends on the beach. This is a time to meet other mums who share this interest and set up your own weekly surf dates.
Newcastle Surfing Mums started their group this year and are always after new members. They meet every second Saturday and every fourth Sunday of the month at around 8am. Location will be advised by SMS on the day so you will need to contact Kristen (Surfing Mums Newcastle co-ordinator) on email kristentola@yahoo.com.au before hand.
For more information on Surfing Mums Inc. go to www.surfingmums.com.

Babes in Arms-Greater Union
1st February 2010

Now that the Christmas school holidays have finished, and many children have just started school, you may have a little time up your hands if you have a little bub at home to venture out for a little mum and bub time.
There is obviously a period in your life where the movies just seem too hard when you have children, so many box office hits are missed. Even if you have a partner is happy to take over when they get home from work, if you are anything like me, you are just too exhausted to go out.
Greater Union makes it easier to take in a movie with their 'Babes in Arms' sessions. 'Babes in Arms' sessions take place at Greater Union Glendale every Wednesday morning outside of school holidays. This is a screening opportunity just for parents who have a gurgling, and squirming little bundle of joy who may be the apple of your eye but may not be the perfect movie companion. This, however is different than your normal movie screening as everyone else is in the same boat so you won't have anyone telling you to be quiet.
You just have to pay for your admission ($9.00 for entry) and children under 5 are free. For parent and child comfort, lights will remain dimmed and sounds levels will be reduced for the session. "Babes in Arms' sessions screen at Greater Union Glendale and for more information go to http://www.greaterunion.com.au/movies/babes.asp. Greater Union Glendale is located at 387 Lake Rd Glendale in the Stockland Supa Centre.

Hunter Ice Skating Stadium-Learn to skate
13th August 2009

When I was a child in the 80's I remember heading to the roller skating rink at Broadmedow to mix with the grooves of the mixed tapes. Roller skating seemed so easy back in those days when you were so close to the floor it didn't hurt as much when you fell. Children think they are invincible and I was one of them until as an adult I tried to ice skate. Whoa! This was not going to be as easy as predicted..and why not? I could roller skate..how was this going to be any different?
Firstly, on roller skates you are supported by four steady wheels. Ice skates you are supported by a thin blade. On roller skates your wheels seemed to go wherever you wanted them to so turning was a breeze. Ice skating..not so easy to turn resulting in falling down on the ice ungracefully.
So if you are anything like me or you would like to introduce your children to the world of Torvill and Dean or the Newcastle North Stars, Hunter Ice Skating Stadium is the place to go for classes.
Every Wednesday from 5pm-6pm, and every Saturday morning (excluding school holidays), the professional instructors can show you the basics through to the more intermediate moves. The learn to skate term runs for 5 weeks and consists of a half hour group lesson followed by an half hour practice. The cost is $55 for a 5 week term plus $3 per session skate hire.
It's not too late for the parents to put on a pair of skates to learn and the Hunter Ice Skating Coffee Club is the place to go. Every Tuesday morning from 9.45am till 11.45am you can get together with other adults who have a lesson with the instructor first and then have a coffee and a chat following the lesson.

Free Fun- Sand Play
2nd August 2009

With perfect weather like this who could resist heading to the beach for some sunny rays.
One of my Free fun activities listed in the A-Z of free fun in Newcastle is heading to Merewether beach (or any Newcastle beach) for some sand play with the kids. We like Merewether beach for a couple of reasons;
1) You can sit on the concrete steps and watch the kids in the sand without being too far away
2) And most importantly, Swells (Kiosk on at Merewether Surf Club) sells great coffee and snacks.
You are killing two birds with one stone..kids are happy and you are happy. However today we didn't kill two birds with one stone as everyone else had the same idea as us and there was no way we could get near the queue at Swells to grab a refreshment.
We needed a plan B.
Bar Beach Kiosk here we come!
If you are an active family you could jump onto the Bathers Way at Merewether Beach and head to Bar Beach Kiosk where they make the most fabulous hand cut chips from $3.50. (Bathers Way is the 5km coastal walk from Nobby's to Glenrock Nature Reserve.)
We headed to Bar Beach Kiosk for the famous hand cut chips but cheated and drove around as our hunger outweighed our desire to get active. Now this is a kiosk that is obviously a popular dining spot as we had to wait in line for a good 10 minutes before being served. But the chips were definitely worth the wait. Bar Beach Kiosk is open Monday-Sunday from 7am-6pm and serve a delicious selection of snacks and meals including bacon and egg rolls and a very tasty looking fisherman's basket.

Term 3 activities-Music
26th July 2009

Ideally our first borns first exposure to music was going to be the tranquil and dulcet tones of Enya in the delivery suite, however that changed when the pain kicked in, music and relaxation techniques went out the window and the only sounds my poor son would have heard were the not so soothing sounds of his mother. We knew best second and third time around that unfortunately music would not be the first thing they heard upon leaving the snug, safe and quiet home they had known for 9 months.
Since then, with a history of musical apptitude in the family (not me though as I faked the whole violin thing for years, couldn't read music and learnt only through sound) it has been an important part in our children's lives.
It has also been stated by many educational experts that music plays a great part in the formulative years of their lives. Why do our kids like Playschool, Justine Clarke, The Wiggles and Hi-Five from such a young age? Because they are entertaining through song and dance and although some children are still too young to know the words...music seems to be the only thing that they may just identify with and certainly stops them crying for that 5 minutes they are upset.
We have some great music school for kids in Newcastle and here are just a few you may want to try this term;

Jungle Sports Newcastle
20th July 2009

Choosing a team sport for your child or should I say letting your child choose a sport that they would like to be involved in can prove to be a difficult decision.
Last term was the season's registrations for winter sports that are on offer in Newcastle. Many of the children at my son's school have enrolled in soccer and are underway in their first season of football.
We asked our son if he wanted to play soccer and with a disinterested look responded with "I want to play golf". Now..the first thing that comes to mind is the successful career of Tiger Woods who too started at a young age, however the chance of a second Tiger Woods from Newcastle, NSW Australia may just not be on the cards just yet. Although Golf is a fantastic game (I have dabbled myself), with a shy child, we would like to encourage a TEAM sport that may build his confidence in a safe and non-competitive environment.
Jungle Sports is an environment where a selection of sports are learnt outside of the club sports programs. Jungle Sports can be found in two Newcastle locations- Newcastle and Lake Macquarie and have a number of sporting programs you can choose from.
- Jungle Soccer:3 & 4 years old- Develops co-ordination, social skills and enhances self esteem and confidence. Runs on weekend mornings and is non-competitive skill based fun.
- Jungle Cubs:18 months-3 years old- Early learning skills including balance, listening, creativity and body movement. Weekday mornings, ball skills, co-ordination and understanding
- Jungle Soccer Evolution: 5-7 years old- Silky soccer skills, agility, team work and small sided games. Weekend mornings, 50 mins sessions, all abilities from beginners to club player.
- Jungle Multi-Sports :3-7 years old- Learn the basic skills of a different sport each week (rugby, AFL, soccer, cricket, basketball, netball, athletics, multi-skills, volleyball and hockey). Exciting all round sports development. Weekend mornings, non-competitive skill based fun.
