Lift Dance Fitness Parties
9th February 2010

If you are anything like us, no matter what sort of party we plan for our kids, the weather is difficult to manipulate.
Every year our son's birthday always has drizzle and I've come to the conclusion that it drizzles because we have a party at home so last year we organised a cinema party. 'Murphy's Law'.....perfect weather, not a cloud in the sky!

This year, we took the chance and had my daughter's party at home and 'Murphy's Law'...humid and drizzle. Now if I had been thinking outside the square I should have taken a look at Lift Dance Fitness Birthday Party options.

Lift Dance Fitness is a casual based dance studio (located in Hamilton), dedicated to the fun and fitness of dance. Outside of the regular scheduled dance classes for all ages they have a range of party options for you little one.
All kids parties are run for 1.5 hours. The extra half hour at the end is included at the end to schedule your own present and cake time. Whilst the children are enjoying the party, the parents are sent off to the local cafes where they can relax and catch up with the other parents. Upon returning, the parents will experience a performance by the children of the dance they have learnt at the party.

There are four party options to choose from;

  • Hip Hop Party- Bring out the bling and baggy pants! Activities include craft, music time (writing their own group hip hop song), Hip Hop dance lesson, games, freestyle dance time.
  • Princess Ball- A beautifully decorated studio is the perfect place to hold a dreamy ball for your little princess. Activtiies include craft, princess makeover, a ballet dance lesson, games, free dance time at the end of the ball.
  • High School Musical-  A red and white themed studio. Activities include craft, a singing lesson, a dance lesson and games.
  • Belly Dance Parties- You will think you have stepped into a Middle Eastern Palace. Activities include, craft, traditional temporary hand tattoos, music time/percussion, a belly dancing lesson and games.

This week, along with getting prepared for school to go back, we had a fourth birthday party to plan for.
Tomorrow we have a girly party (plus three boys who are family members) for my daughter and after filling party bags, and preparing decorations I have just sat down to type tonight's ABC Daily. Tomorrow will then be party food prepartion, games and decorations. For a smallish party there is a lot to do.

This is where Banter and Frolic vintage inspired party kits come in handy as everything in the pre-prepartion side is done.
Two mums, Sharntel and Felicity are  the inspiring team behind Banter and Frolic party kits. The kits have been designed to encourage children's imagination and free play, regardless of arranged party games, which are also included for those who like a more structured event.

There are five party themes to choose from that caters for all tastes from the 'Enchanted forest fairy' to the 'The Carnival is in Town' party kit. Each kit is packed full of items needed to make the party complete including decorations, party invitations, food packaging, party bags and tags and best of all a party manual. Bunnings
30th September

I can't believe that party month has come to a close and by midnight tonight we will have many winners of our September competition. As it is our last post for party month I thought I would bring you a party idea that two readers have brought to my attention. Sarah and Mary Ann  both emailed me about the FREE Bunnings party venue.

Now I knew about Bunnings weekly DIY kid's workshops but was unaware that Bunnings allowed parties to be held at their location.

Belmont Bunnings is available for kid's parties and what a stress free and hassle free environment! All you have to do is bring your own food and Bunnings does the rest. Bunning's staff take care of everything. Setting up and cleaning up is all included and a craft activity is run by a staff member.
You also have the wonderful play equipment to take advantage of in between craft activities and party food. Adults also have access to the coffee van located close by to the party location and if this isn't enough the party guests go home with their craft item and a goody bag from Bunnings.

I can't believe that all this is FREE and available to parents for their children. To find your nearest store location and to enquire as to whether your local Bunnings runs birthday parties go to www.bunnings.com.au for more information.

Little Betsy Baker
29th September

I have always been a terrible baker! I love to cook meals but can't for the life of me can't seem to master the art of baking. Something always tends to happen and can you believe I have also been known to burn packet cakes and biscuits. I make the excuse that I just don't have the right baking accessories. My cake pans are too big or small, and I can't can't be bothered to use my hand mixer to cream butter and sugar. I know..a good tradesman never blames its tools but this is my only excuse really.

I dread when the birthday's come around because I know that I am expected to come up with 'le pista resistance' at the end of the party.
This year I attempted another cake for Matilda's first birthday. I couldn't keep it simple could I? I decided to spell out her name in cake- TILLY. Looked easy but then when it came to icing it..hmmm..tasted good but looked terrible. And it didn't help when my three year old decided to pick up the cake container and tip it sideways...DISASTER!

If you do like to bake but don't have the right equipment to create beautiful cakes, Little Betsy Baker is the online shop for you.
At Little Betsy Baker you can find a gorgeous selection of products for baking, decorating and serving gorgeous cakes, cupcakes and cookies for that special celebration. They have a fabulous range of candles, cookie cutters, cake toppers, cake pans, beautiful cupcake wrappers, cake stands and a beautiful selection of aprons to assist in the whole domestic goddess appearance.

For more information or to purchase one of Little Betsy Baker's unique and affordable products, go to www.littlebetsybaker.com.au

Blackbutt Reserve
24th September  (Happy Birthday to me)

Thomas went to a party at Richley Reserve (bottom end of Blackbutt Reserve) on the weekend and it was a perfect location for a party. The party was situated on one of the flat sections on top of the hill to accomodate the pony rides the party host had hired for the kids. It was great! Enough space for kids and ponys to run freely without bothering anyone else. Shade was in abundance and leafy enough to keep the suns rays away in certain areas.

If you don't want to share your party with the wildlife, you can hire one of the picnic shelters which gurantees that you will have a picnic spot on the day. No more sending the husband off at 5am to man the tables before the crowds arrive. Blackbutt now has six shelters available to hire for your next function;

  • Carnley Ave Shelter- 9 picnic tables, electric BBQ's and access to electricity. Seats approx. 50-60 people. Entrance via Carnely Ave Kotara.
  • Pioneer Shelter- 1 large and 2 small picnic tables, electric BBQ's. Seats approx. 40 people. Entrance via Carnley Ave Kotara.
  • Carnley Grass Shelter- 5 picnic tables, electric BBQ's. Seats approx. 30-40 people. Entrance via Carnley Ave Kotara.
  • Richley Reserve Shelter- 1 large picnic table, electric BBQ's, access to electricity. Seats approx 20-30 people. Entrance via Freyberg St New Lambton.
  • Watson Shelter- 6 picnic tables. Seats approx. 40 people. Entrance via Freyberg St New Lambton
  • Pond Shelter- 4 picnic tables. Seats 20-25 people, equal entry from car park. Entrancee via Freyberg St New Lambton.

Fees- $160 per shelter (weekend bookings), $125 per shelter (weekday bookings), $72 pond shelter.

Koala Encounters is run daily at 2pm and you can also have a private encounter with the koalas for your child's birthday party. Minimum fee is $35 for up to 10 people and $3.50 per person thereafter. For more info and bookings phone 4904 3344.

Dress Ups Kids
23rd September

We haven't been to too many dress up kid's parties which is a shame as there is nothing like watching a child transform themselves into another character and then take on that role of that character.

Every evening after baths, it is Isobel's routine to go into her bedroom and put on her fairy skirt, jewellery and cinderella slippers all before she gets dressed. There is something so innocent in watching her pretend she is the fairy princess.

Dress Up parties are a great way for kids to express themselves for the short time they are role playing another character. It's great for the not so confident child to come out of his/her shell when dressed up in a costume.

'Dress Ups Kids' is there perfect place to purchase a hand made children's dress up costume. 'Dress Ups Kids' is owned and run by mums Liza and Lyn who have a mutual dream to allow children and grandchildren of today to enter the world of make believe.
'Dress Ups Kids' has many children's dress ups to choose from including Super Heros, Alice in Wonderland, Builders, Nurses, Fairies, Magicians and the ever popular Pirates. Prices of the dress ups vary but you can expect to pay around $36-$39 for a good quality hand made costume. Best of all, after the dress up party, the kids get to keep it to dress up every other day when entering the world of make believe.

For more information go to www.dressupskids.com.au or phone 0417 460 439.

Loot Bags
22nd September

Are you tired of your kids coming home from parties with large lolly bags? Well here is something  quite different that is just so affordable.

When I do loot or party bags I try to avoid the whole lolly bag thing and try to look for party favours instead. This however is costly and when weighing it up, the lolly bag seems more of an affordable option.
Party bags play an integral part of children's birthday parties. It's a way of saying thank you for attending and thanks for the gift plus allowing the party guests to retain the memories of the party.

'Loot Bags' are perfect to fit in with any themed party from Pirates to Fairies. 'Loot Bags' have many themed party bags to choose from. There's one for the practical jokers who love to play tricks, a Crazy Games bag and not to mention the Gross and Stinky Loot bag which is perfect for those little boys who are fascinated by all this stuff.

These bags are valued at around $12.00 a bag but you can buy then for only $3.25 each plus postage (within NSW is $11.95) which proves to be a very affordable option if you are buying for many.

You can also save on time as all you have to do is order online and they are delivered straight to you door so no more last minute running around. Go to www.lootbags.com.au to see all the party bags available or to purchase.

Lake Macquarie Live Steam Locomotive Society
18th September

Lake Macquarie Live Steam Locomotive Society or 'Edgeworth Trains' as we like to call it is the best party spot for any child who loves the miniature railway. This is a very popular spot for parties and you will find that most Sundays when the trains are running (I.E the last Sunday of the month) they have various birthdays spotted around the picnic grounds.

On the last Sunday of the month, the Lake Macquarie Live Steam Locomotive Society dedicate their time to providing this fabulous service to Novocastrians in Velinda St Edgeworth. All the trains are working replicas of actual steam trains. Some trains can take up to ten years to build and could total around $40,000 in the process.

Not only do they have three different tracks that wind around the grounds (including a big 7.5 inch track that has it's own tunnel), there are a couple of traction engines that my kids love.

We have been invited to a party at 'Edgeworth Trains' a couple of years ago and it was great. The kids got to ride on the various trains and then afterwards have a selection of party food that the party host brought to be set up in the shaded picnic grounds. Wood BBQ's are also supplied if you are thinking of a sausage sizzle.
This is a very affordable option as the trains are free and you can bring all your own food. Although the rides are free for the public, it is requested that if you enjoyed your day at 'Edgeworth Trains' you give a small gold coin donation in one of the donation boxes around the park. This allows the Lake Macquarie Live Steam Locomotive Society to keep providing the community with this wonderful resource by maintaining the trains where necessary.

'Edgeworth Trains' run from 1pm-4pm (20 minute break for drivers at 2.30pm) on the last Sunday of the month and can be found at Velinda St Edgeworth. For more information go to http://www.lakemacquarielivesteam.org.au or phone 02 49587171. This is a party venue any train enthusiast will love! No need to book for a party, just show up on the last Sunday of the month. But be early to secure your position.

Pirouette Dance
13th September

Wow! What a skirt.
The Pirouette Dance Pettiskirt is the perfect party attire for every little girl who loves twirling and loves feeling like a princess in the clothes she wears.

My friend's daughters turned up to Matilda's birthday party in gorgeous pettiskirts and boy they just looked lovely!  This is definitely something every little girl (even available for adults) should have in her wardrobe.

The Pettiskirt has been a hit in the States and can be seen on various celebrities daughters as the latest fashion trend. Pirouette Dance was one of the first suppliers of Pettiskirts within Australia. They were orginally supplied for demi character solos and tiny groups items, but when Pirouette Dance had more requests for these skirts as flower girl outfits and party frocks, Pirouette Dance decided to manufacture their own line of Pettiskirts.

Pirouette Dance have recently launched their new Spring Carnival range that revolve around beautiful brights of raspberry, yellow and orange. We are so lucky this month to have Pirouette Dance as one of our competition sponsors and they are giving one of our members a chance to win one of these gorgeous pettiskirts with matching top. The skirts are priced at $70 and matching rosette tops are $30. For more information or to purchase one of these delicious pettiskirts go to www.pirouettedance.com.au.

You won't be disappointed!

The Spinning Top
10th September

There is just something lovely and innocent about educational and wooden toys and you won't have to go far in Newcastle for a retailer of a large variety of the aformentioned.

The Spinning Top specialises in educational and wooden toys and not only sells from a shop in Adamstown that just says 'toys' but also has a wonderful website that is so comprehensive you could spend hours fawning over the wonderful selection of play items. You can always count on my brother to turn up at the nephews and nieces bithday parties with a toy that has come from The Spinning Top. For him it is the only place to go to get something unique, affordable and you don't have to enter the shopping centres to get a park.

For Matilda's 1st birthday I had a gift in mind and knew there was only one place to get it. The red ladybird wheelybug above was given to her to cruise around the polished floorboards when she gets her wobbly legs a little more steady. She loves it!
Unfortunately the three and a half and the six year old also love it and trying to get them off it seems quite impossible at times.

When you enter, it's like a world of it's own. Toys hanging from ceiling to floor, and shelves filled with the latest toys and books. It's a great place to take the kids if you have to as they have a kid's play area so you can peruse on your own without the pester power from the kids.

My favourite wooden items are from 'Le Toy Van'. A beautiful french brand that has the most exquisite dolls houses, matching caravans and accessories. Too cute to pass up on for our young Isobel.

The Spinning Top is located at 617-621 Glebe Rd Adamstown (you can't miss it, it's the big red building) or go to their website www.thespinningtop.com.au for a selection of wonderful birthday gifts!

Hello Naomi
8th September

Cupcakes, cupcakes and more cupcakes!
A party is not a party without cupcakes, even if the kids eat the tops off the cake and leave the bottoms as we have had on many occasion. However, the Hello Naomi cupcakes are too pretty to even eat!

We received some gorgeous cupcakes for Matilda's 1st Birthday and I have to say how delighted we were with the finished product. Naomi worked to the brief accordingly and provided us with some beautiful ladybird cupcakes for the ladybird themed party. The kids circled around them like bees to honey for a while (we had to admire them for a while before being devoured) and then when the first cupcake was picked up...they didn't last 5 minutes.
As predicted, there were a few tops eaten off with the bottoms sitting lonely on the table.

Hello Naomi creates the most whimisical cakes, cupcakes and cookies to order. Everything is made from scratch and Naomi will work to a particular theme for your party. Hello Naomi also makes boxed cupcakes to order. What a great unique present if you are struggling for ideas. Cupcake gift boxes come in 12, 15 and 15 and are priced at $70, $85 and $90 respectively.

Take a look at the minicakes chocolate box or the sushi plate mini cakes..it's really amazing how Naomi replicates these foods in cake. Sydney is swamped with cupcakes coutures on every corner and now we have our own piece of cupcake heaven right here in Newcastle...yipee!

For more information go to www.hellonaomi.com.au or phone 0413 296 670.

Rosie's School of Rock
Rock Star Party

I imagine trying to come up with a new party theme each year for children gets harder and harder as they get older. The old jumping castle just isn't going to cut it anymore after rolling it out year after year. So what do you do, especially for boys?

Rosie's School of Rock is a facility that operates under one of Australia's most successful musicians. Craig "Rosie" Rosevear has had a successful career in the rock industry and best known as the drummer in Newcastle band 'The Screaming Jets'.
Rosie's School of Rock has various music programs and classes your child can participate in including piano, guitar and drumming lessons and something a little different is the Rock Star Party that you can book for your child's next birthday party.

Rosie's School of Rock will come to your location and transform the party guests from kids to rock stars with a true rock star makeover. This includes name, hair, makeup and accessories.
The gig is started by a performance by the Rosie's School of Rock crew and then it's the mini rock stars turn. They will grab a mike, and sing along to the tunes the band will play. The cost is $240 for an hour and a half of fun filled entertainment by the rock crew (up to 10 children).

Rosie's School of Rock parties are covered for public liability and all crew have been subject to the working with children check. For more information go to www.rosiesschoolofrock.com or phone 4927 5027.

Shazz  is available for your next party in many different characters. Dora the Explorer, Rose Fairy Shazz, Sunshine the Clown and many more available on request...just ask!

She has many different packages suitable to all budgets including Themed Kid's parties (12 years and under), face painting and balloon packages, crazy craft party (5 years and over) and jewellery making (10 years and over). Shazz provides great entertainment with fabulous face painting, original stories, fun and easy crafts, and traditional and new twists on games (pass the parcel included).

Shazz  is available for weekends and weekday afternoon parties if this time suits you better. There is also an incentive to booking an afternoon party with 'Shazz is'. She will give 20% discount to those parties booked Monday-Thursday afternoon if you mention Alphabet Street. (Subject to availability)
If you just book the face painting package mention Alphabet Street to receive a free gift for the BIRTHDAY BOY/GIRL.

Shazz  is highly entertaining and the kids will just love her!

I just had to show you.......
4th September 2009

...the amount of effort my friend put in for her daughter's 5th birthday party!

Sharnel is the part owner of The Cupcake company ( http://www.thecupcakecompany.blogspot.com/) in Brisbane hence the most divine cupcakes and three tiered birthday cake complete with birthday cake topper.

The dessert/lolly buffet is becoming the next big thing in the world of party. Amy Atlas who is America's queen of the dessert buffet was Sharnel's inspiration when creating this spectacular event for Miss Olivia.

The pom poms were created using Sharnel's want to be mother Martha Stewart's instructions (http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/article/pom-poms-and-luminarias )and just looked divine. I have to say though I don't think I would like to next in line putting on a party for my child...just how do you top that? Big shoes to fill and all that!

The Jitter Jacks
3rd September 2009

There have been many times I have struggled with entertainment ideas for my kid's parties when they were a bit younger. Some entertainment options may just be a tad old for them but this is one entertainment group that are suitable for all ages, especially the littlies.

Their musical background and credentials in music, singing and dancing gives them the essential qualifications needed when entertaining a group of children at your party.

The Jitter Jax use orginal music as well as popular children's songs and nursery rhymes to get kids physically activated and musically involved.

The Jitter Jacks party package includes;

1 x 1/2 hour performance by the Jitter Jacks in a fun filled, interactive muscial adventure of live singing and dancing
1 x 1/2 hour of favourite children's party games
There will be prize giveaways as well as a special gift for the birthday girl/boy

Twiggi-Boutique Party Products
1st September 2009

We are currently renovating so we had to select a party venue offsite for Matilda's first birthday. Destination -Gregson Park...Great! Weather forecast- clearing shower and gusty...not so great. You can't plan for weather and when planning a party, this is the main factor that needs to addressed (particularly if you were planning to put up a gazebo decorated up with a theme).

Well, the gazebo and decorations lasted five minutes. Wind took us by force but it was by luck that we secured a covered shelter nearby.
The weeks leading up to the party, a ladybird  theme was decided upon...cute and age appropriate (no violence in sight unless we had one rogue ladybird deciding to fightback against the human race). What I needed was ladybird accessories for the decorations and party favours. Destination TWIGGI.

Twiggi is an online party boutique store for all your party accessories. When you go to this website, there are just so many beautiful things that you just won't know where to start. To assist you in your journey, Twiggi has items categorised into themes. Once you have your theme, you can start clicking. This is where self discipline has to take control as your shopping cart may start to overload once you have bought the items you need..well..want.

A few of my favourite items include;

  • Paper Eskimo's party bunting
  • The red and white polkadot lantern
  • The spotty patty cups to make any cupcake  look so delicious
  • And the multitude of party favours including, the bug in a nut, the insect wooden mini compasses and the very cute wooden Twiggi royal whistles.

You don't have to spend a fortune to get a few key items for your party and Twiggi is perfect to stop by to pick up a few gorgeous party accessories at very affordable prices. Take a look yourself and head to www.twiggi.com.au

Let's Party!
31st August 2009

Today is my daughter Matilda's first birthday! An emotional yet joyous milestone in that it has been a year since she was born. Tonight at 8.05pm (the time she came into the world a year ago) my husband and I snuck upstairs to give her a quick kiss  to wish her a real happy birthday, unbeknownst to her whilst she slept.

A year has passed and from now it is a case of each year what birthday party theme, venue, decorations we will have. Yesterday we had some friends to celebrate this occasion at Gregson Park. It was nice but 1 is a funny age as it is more about the parent's friends than the childs at this moment in time.

A few years back, someone had told me that they knew someone in Melbourne that hired Hi-5 for their child's birthday! Is this too much and do the kids really care?  It is hard to come up with a different and affordable party each year and this is where Alphabet Street would like to assist.

TOMORROW IS THE START OF '30 DAYS OF PARTY MONTH!'

We have researched some different party venues, suppliers and entertainers that you may not have heard of giving you options for your next party celebration. In conjunction with party month we also have a great selection of party prizes to giveaway so make sure you sign up to our newsletter for details on how to enter.

And what better way to kick off party month than off the back of our gorgeous girl's 1st birthday! Happy Birthday Matilda Grace!
