Lark Handmade
28th March 2010

If there is one place I would love to stop in next time I am in Victoria, it's Daylesford.  Yes, the many day spas dotted around the area are very enticing, but it's the quaint little Lark store I would love to stick my head into to look at the beautiful wares they showcase. If you are lucky to visit the shop front located at 4a Duke St Daylesford, you will find all of the Lark range as well as lots of handmade items that are exclusive to the shop.

But alas, we will not be venturing that way for a long time with three small children so in the meantime I will have to adore from afar using the World Wide Web.
Lark began in England in 2005 when Allison Jones started to make things using the vintage materials she had been collecting as a teenager. Her whimsical range of handmade toys and vintage dresses were quickly snapped up by stores which in turn gave Allison a business opportunity of her own.
Many years later, Lark is now run from this quaint town in country Victoria with her Australian husband.

With my favourite brands like Lark, Belle and Boo, Olive's Friend Pop, Dumpling Dynasty and many more, you will find yourself lost in the plethora of cute and quirky items. There is just too much to choose.
Lark stocks everything from accessories to homewares, books and craft to baby and children's products. Although Allison still makes and designs many of the products herself, she also works with skilled local craftspeople, and non profit community groups including a women's artisans in rural Bangladesh and a group of adults with disabilities in Central Victoria.

Kawaii For You
25th March 2010

Back in the 80's, I had my first experience of Japanese 'Kawaii' (cute). Like most young girls in the 80's I had an eraser collection that contained one eraser I thought was the cutest in the collection- a pair of traditional Japanese shoes or Geta.

The rise of cuteness in Japanese culture emerged in the 1970's and is now accepted as a part of Japan's national identity today with many companies using cute mascots and products to present their wares and services to the public.  Many kid's today still love the cute or Kawaii Japanese brands of the 80's including 'Hello Kitty". So what is it about 'Kawaii' that is loved by children all over the world today?

Kawaii For You is a one stop shop for all things cute. Owned and run by mum of three, Christine has filled a hole in the market for gorgeous and unique items that cannot be found on every street corner. There is the cutest range of dolls, notebooks, lunchboxes, bags, sippy cups all with our childhood storybook themes printed on them including, Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Pinocchio.

The 'Yoko' dolls come from the gorgeous French brand 'Madame Mo' which is located in Paris and whose inspiration comes from Japanese animation. Many of the lunch boxes, sippy cups and memo pads are designed by Shinzi Katoh, on of the most famous Zakka artists in Japan.

I would have to say there wouldn't be too many items you wouldn't love in this amazing range of Japanese 'Kawaii'. It is also quite affordable with items ranging from RRP$3.50 for Deco Tape to RRP$33.95 for the beautiful Yoko dolls. To see the full range of 'Kawaii For You' products CLICK HERE.

Everything Boys
22nd March 2010

I have a friend who has all boys. Although she had always thought a girl would be in the equation she was blessed with three healthy and energetic boys.
When she shops for them, it is often hard not to look at the pretty girlie items that stores often stock. As I have two girls of my own I have noticed that there are so many girly products on the market that sometimes tend to outweigh the boy specific products that I also need to look at. Woudn't it be great to go straight to a store that only has products for boys bypassing all the pink fluff and frills?

'Everything Boys' is just that. An online store where you can shop for everything for boys in one place.
'Everything Boys' was created by a frustrated mum of two boys who realised when shopping that there was limited choice of stores catering for boys. There is no need to keep searching from store to store as 'Everything Boys' stocks everything you need for the little men in your life from fashion to manchester.

`Everything Boys' stocks some fabulous brands including B.Box, Bobinette, Books to Wear, Kiddimoto, Petit Prince, Pram Rock and Skeanie. And with winter around the corner, there are still so many more great brands to come including Lemmi Jeans, Marquise and Bandicoot Kids.

Unlike many online stores, `Everything Boys' also caters for children older than babies so you can guarantee that if you are in the market for Newborn to 8 year old boys products, `Everything Boys' is the place for you. To see the full range of brands stocked by `Everything Boys' CLICK HERE.

Gaia Organic Cotton Rugs
20th March 2010

I love this time of the year when the days are hot and the nights are cool enough to sleep with a blanket on.  The only problem is that I tend to be sleeping so well at the moment that I haven't been waking up to cover up the children at night so in the morning they are crouched up in the foetal position, with sheets kicked off. I feel terrible.

Unfortunately my kids are now too big to wrap, but if you have babies who enjoy the comfort of being swaddled, Gaia Organic Cotton presents this winter an extended collection of their much loved baby wraps. What makes them extra special is that they are generous in size and are made from 100% certified organic stretch cotton. With fifteen exclusive designs and prints to choose from, you may have a little trouble choosing one from the great selection.

The Basic rugs come in four fabulous colourways; pink, navy, grey and red covering off both genders in the range. If you want something a litle more specific, florals, spots, engineered stripes and rugs with pink or silver satin trim or a delicate signature ruffle may be just what you are looking for.

The luxurious stretch organic cotton fabric means baby is able to move during the different cycles of sleep whilst still remaining safely snug like they are still in the womb itself.  You will also be spoilt for choice, as the Winter 2010 collection also co-ordinate with the rugs making the it the perfect give set for the new mum. Rugs are priced at RRP$49.95.

Gaia Organic Cotton is stocked in David Jones, selected children's wear boutiques and online at Gaia Organic Cotton. To see the full range of Gaia products CLICK HERE.

Olive's friend Pop
17th March 2010

My mum kept a few key pieces of my clothing when I was young that she made and passed it to me for my kids.
It is rare to find many children wearing their parents clothing as you think that after 35+ years the condition and quality of the clothing may be questionable. My quilted overalls and playsuits are in close to the same condition as they were when I wore them. And the best thing about them is now that vintage clothing is making a return, they don't seem out of place and there have been many times that when worn by my daughters, they receive many compliments.

I love vintage clothing! The clothing of the innocent era of children wearing items of clothing that reflected what they were meant to do in them such a sleepsuits and playsuits. Corduroy overalls, lined jackets, pinafore and smocked dresses, all popular items of the 1940's children's fashion. And how lucky are we to have designers like Olive's friend Pop bringing back quality children's clothing from many decades ago.

'Olive's friend Pop' is a collection of vintage-inspired clothing for little girls or as the designers have labelled it, 'nostalgic playwear!' Their creations are inspired by "proper little girl's clothes" of their grandmother's generation, Post WWII and from a time when little girls looked like little girls. Olive's friend Pop is also run and created by two mums whose daughters are the inspiration behind their creations and designs.

On the 'Olive's friend Pop' website you can view current Autumn/Winter 2010 designs including, the Mabel Tweed wool blend coat with floral cotton lining and brooch, pinwale corduroy bib and button overalls in mint and camel and exquisite tunic and long sleeve dresses. Julia and Lea have also given you a sneak peek at what they will be offering for Spring/Summer 2010 including floral bonnets, cotton pinafore dresses with ric rac trim and cotton shorts with floral lining.

Itti Bitti Nappies
15th March 2010

It's so great to feature good quality products from businesses that parents will love but when that business is based in Newcastle, there is even something more special about it.

The Itti Bitti Nappy company was established by Newcastle Mum of two, Sue McLauchlin who was unhappy with the bulk of many cloth nappies. She decided to design a much trimmer nappy with a slim crotch, high cut shape at the front but still had the super snug fit making them truly as tiny as a disposable. The nappies were named after Sue's Itty Bitty daughter as she was the inspiration for the design.

I have to admit that I have not been the best mother on the nappy front to mother nature. I have always used disposables and guess that has been out of sheer laziness and lack of education on cloth versus disposable nappies. Recently I finally got to get 'up close and personal' with an Itti Bitti nappy at 'Kids in Style' and was extremely impressed with the quality and ease of using a modern cloth nappy.

The Itti Bitti Nappy comes in a range of nappies to suit each baby and parent's lifestyle. They have a organic bamboo cotton booster and an outer made from luxurious fabrics. They have all been designed to create a breathable nappy that will not irritate your child and are very durable for ease of laundering.

The nappies range in price starting at $27.50 for the 'Bitti d'lish all in one' range and go up to around $29.95 for the 'Bitti d'lish snap in one' range.
To see the full range of Itti Bitti products go to www.ittibitti.com.au.

Poss Bloss
8th March 2010

I can't count the number of times our kids clothes have come home from pre-school covered in the pre-school's "water soluble paint" I can't get  out. These clothes still go back to school washed but with paint splots still on them. Yes, there are aprons provided but somehow the paint still manages to work its way around the protective cover.

If you love gorgeous and quality made products, and you have kids who love to create, you can't go past Poss Bloss!
Poss Bloss started when Jodie, a  mum of two girls needed a creative outlet and was tired of uniforms coming home from school ruined after paint has seeped through fabric smocks. The long sleeved PVC front smock was the initial product she created only then to follow with a beautiful repertoire of PVC and fabric products.

Poss Bloss not only has a range of the prettiest yet practical smocks, you can also buy a selection of PVC bibs, PVC Covered Aprons for the little chef at heart, PVC Nappy wallets that hold 1-2 nappies, a packets of wipes and a nappy sack, Splat Mats for that messy eater, Library Bags and laminated fabric Bunting which is very durable for the outdoors.

Poss Bloss also caters for both boys and girls in their product range and has a wonderful selection of little boys designs you will love. You won't be able to resist the Red Denim Star Smock or the gorgeous Pink Petal products. Products range from $8.95 for a PVC bib to $39.95 to a Bohemian Splat Mat and everything in between.

To see the full range of Poss Bloss products go to www.possbloss.com .

Urchin
5th March 2010

I love the saying, `the simplest things are often the best' and in Urchin's case, I have to agree.
Urchin's ambitions are simple-to create great children's clothes and accessories everyone will love, especially kids!

With the cooler months approaching, Urchin's cotton long sleeve tees and bodysuits are perfect to mix and match with a pair of pants or skirt. This season's range of long sleeve tees and bodysuits include designs for both your little girl or boy. Juicy pears, toadstools, prancing unicorns, purring cats, snails, sausage dogs, dinosaurs and the cutest little pair on pink shoes all appliqued on 100% cotton t-shirts.
Each of the garments is hand finished with carefully selected materials, which means each item has the personal touch. Recycled fabrics and buttons are also used and with Urchin's philisophy of quality means all the t-shirts are Australian made.

In addition to the gorgeous range of appliqued tees and body suits,  Urchin also offers a range of children's room canvasses which come in seven unique designs. Each artwork is stitched fabric stretched over canvas using both recyclable and new materials. The canvasses are approximately 30.5cm x 30.5cm and are priced at RRP$60 per canvas. My favourite is the 'Hungry like a wolf' artwork.

Zzzoolight-Bubba Bling
27th February 2010

Today I was lucky enough to view the fabulous collections from many gorgeous brands you see online and instore at the 'Kids In Style' trade fair in Sydney. What a beautiful range of clothes and products that will be available within the next month to purchase for your little one. I will show you some of the products over the next couple of days but one product which is currently available at Bubba Bling is the 'Zzzoolight'.

This was the first product that captured my attention as we walked in as it was so striking!.
'Zzzoolight' is the lamp that help your children dream. What a great way for the children to think that these enchanting animals are watching over them allowing them to get to sleep.

'Zzzoolight' is made from a polypropylene sheet and designed by Italian architect Ramin Razani. The lamps are sturdy and virtually unbreakable, which is great for little hands that like to touch. 'Zzzoolights' do not warm up, have a low voltage and are perfectly safe as your children's night light.

The lamps are 12 volt with an 11 watt compact flourescent lamp which gives a a lovely bright white light. The lamp is MEPS compliant and meets Australian Standard CISPR 15:2006. The compact flourescent globe is energy efficient and has a life of approximately 6000 hours.

The great thing is, Bubba Bling has just added the 'Zzzoolight' range to their online store and for $129.00 each you can purchase one of these delightful animals for your little one's room. To see the full range of animals available from Bubba Bling CLICK HERE.

Kids Confidential
18th February 2010

In my 'pre-children' days, I don't think I have ever been one of these die hard 'shopoholics' who have lined up at the department stores doors overnight to grab a good bargain at sale time. When I watch the footage on the news I cringe seeing the hords of people rushing through the doors pushing people out of the way to grab a reduced item over someone else. YIKES!

In my current life, I have tried on several occasions to shop with kids around sale time ( I.E A couple of weeks into the sale period), which has resulted in children playing hide and seek in the clothes racks and infants trying to get out of their pram wanting to join in. These trips usually end in tears...and sometimes they are mine.

Did you know you have the opportunity of avoiding the chaos, and being able to shop all year round for great sales all from your the comfort if your armchair?
Kids Confidential is a ' first in the know' website listing all the sales available for your little one. You can enjoy savings from 10% to 80% off fashion, decor, and party supplies online and also at selected stores listed under each market. Sign up to their newsletter to receive an email with the coolest kidstuff, hottest maternity sales discounts, special offers and shopping events.

To enjoy a great range of savings from various kid's businesses visit www.kidsconfidential.com.au. And for a little something for the 'Yummy Mummies', make sure your visit Kids Confidential's sister site www.missyconfidential.com.au for a great range of discounted designer labels.

Twospoonfulsofsugar
15th February 2010

I have a child that would do craft 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if she could. Each morning same ritual,  TV, breakfast and then..."can I do some craft now?"

For her birthday you would never have guessed that she loved craft with the numerous craft kits she received,  from sticky mosaics to 'decorate your own handbag'. These craft kits have kept her entertained for hours but it can be costly replenshing the craft cupboard once everything has been completed. So how do you keep kids entertained with imaginative craft activities that aren't completed in minutes at an affordable price and don't end up in the bin?

Twospoonfulsofsugar share the smiles around with "The Farmyard", a collection of uniquely fun and furry handmade greeting cards and make-it-yourself "make me" craft kits featuring ten characters that are destined to be kept and cherished or given away to someone you love.

The make-it-yourself make me greeting card craft kits are educational, encourage creativity, imagination and sharing in a fun, hands on activity. They allow kids to learn, and explore their creativity as well as increasing their fine motor skills through cutting, gluing and accessorizing with a range of textures, pictures and fur. This results in your child creating their own farmyard greeting card or the start of a keepsake storybook.

Twospoonfulsofsugar products are made by hand, with love and a smile, in Australia by designer Sheryl Cole. The "make me" craft kits are affordable fun priced at RRP $8.00 and come in a selection of Cow, Duck, Frog, Cat, Pig, Dog, Horse, Kangeroo, Koala and a new addition to the family, "Nibbles" the Sheep.

Jacob & Bonomi
13th February 2010

Of all the baby and children's products, I have found it most difficult to find good quality and stylish bedding.

When we moved house, the children were to get new rooms that included new decor. I had something in mind and searched high and low but could not find anything that would suit my daughter's bedroom. I ended up buying a very well known brand that looked okay on the pack but when I opened it up looked too bright and felt quite cheap. I ended up taking it off and buying a simple pink with white spot quilt cover.

If I had known about jacob & bonomi when I was searching for nursery/bedroom bedlinen, I would have been ecstatic with the range they offer for cots and single beds. Their designs are perfect for any child's bedroom or nursery.

Jacob & bonomi was launched in 2006 when designer and owner Emma Gordon had her first baby. As her son moved from crib to cot, new linen was needed, but like myself Emma found it hard to find a style that suitable. After having a design in mind and not being able to find it, Emma could see an opportunity to create something different to the styles that were on the market. With a background in photography and design, she got straight to work and created a luxurious range of bedlinen for children that is made from 100% cotton percale with a 250 thread count for added softness. Designs include 'li'l apples', 'pirates', 'cowboys and cactus' and 'tree of life'.

The range of products include cot sheet sets, single bed doona covers and single bed sheets, drawstring bags, and 100% cotton pram and cot blankets.  To see the full range of products from jacob and bonomi go to www.jacobandbonomi.com.au.

Ivy Designs
7th February 2010

With the daily hot and humid weather, the last thing I want to think about is purchasing winter clothing for the children. The department stores obviously think differently with pre-season promotion of their current winter range.

If you are trying to stretch out the last of your summer children's clothing (even though the trousers look more like 3/4 pants than full length trousers) to avoid having to spend more dollars on summer clothing that may be only used for another couple of weeks, well, you may just think twice when you visit the Ivy Designs website.

Ivy Designs was founded in 2008 by two sisters Wynona and Anna who had always had a passion for designing and creating since they were children. Their designs are modern with a hint of vintage, stylish and durable and best of all the designs are from a limited run making their designs unique, limiting double ups at playgroups or parties.

Their beautiful garments feature delightful buttons, gorgeous trims, applique and embroidery, giving each piece a personal and feminine touch. The garments are all handmade in Australia from a sweatshop free environment.

Although we are yet to see the Winter 10 designs, the Spring/Summer 09 collection are playfully reminiscent of a warm summer's day with a blend of florals, ginghams, polka dots and a slight hint of french country. Pinafore and peasant style dresses are ideal for Spring and Summer and can be layered with leggings leading up to the cooler weather. Currently, Ivy Designs has a sale on various items in their spring/summer range with up to 50% off selected items.

To see the current collection or to take advantage of this great sale, go to www.ivydesigns.com.au.

Earlybirds
3rd February 2010

Of my three pregnancies, I never had one that reached forty weeks gestation. My eldest came into the world at 37 weeks, and my two girls were both 38 weeks.
Although I was a little apprehensive, 37 weeks is considered full term so the chance of any medical conditions was slim.

Although we were blessed that there were no complications with our "early" arrival, many parents aren't as lucky with around 38,000 babies being delivered prematurely each year in Australia.

When planning for a newborn, many parents fill their cupboards with triple zero and sometimes quadruple zero clothing expecting a baby with a healthy weight range.  But for those who do need smaller sized clothing, Earlybirds is the place to go for clothing for premature or small babies.

'Earlybirds' was establish in 2002 by Lynda Day, who had given birth to an 'earlybird' of her own with her son arriving 10 weeks early and only weighing 1.276kgs. Lynda consulted with Paediatricians, NICU specialists and other parents on how the brand should be developed and launched. Armed with this information, 'Earlybirds' was created with a range of small babywear to cater for premature and small babies filling a gap in the market.

Each item of clothing has been developed with baby in mind, ensuring that these little ones from 800g to newborn (4.5kg) are catered for with hats, booties, wraps, nightgowns, vests and much more. The latest addition to the 'Earlybirds' range is the 'Organics' range. Made from 100% certified organic cotton and free from harmful chemicals, this organic cotton guarantees softness and safety for your baby's fragile skin.

To see the full range of 'Earlybird' clothing go to www.earlybirds.com.au or phone 1800 666 550 for more information.

"Green" Toys
26th January 2010

Today is my daughter's fourth birthday. She received quite a few presents from us and family and one I thought was extremely interesting was the Barbie Thumbelina teaching computer we bought her. When I bought it, I saw the pretty and practical side of this gift. It's so girly looking (looks like a handbag when closed so I knew my daughter would love it), and it teaches, letters, numbers, and shapes.

I have to say, however, that I did notice the packaging as it came in a VERY brown recycled box. The manufacturers produced their product in environmentally friendly packaging. They also have made a computer that teaches at a young age the process of being "Green". Many times I would hear Thumbellina say..."The recycling logo is shaped like a triangle...can you find the triangle?" (the the recycle logo would come up on screen) "Always reduce and then recycle".

Many manufacturers of toys and children's products are starting young with the education process which is great for the future of our children.
There are many retailers that are devoting their product range to organic and eco-friendly products including, nappies, toys, clothing and skincare.

Three online retailers that carry organic, eco-friendly and fair trade products include 'Mudd Kids' and 'Ecobabe' and 'Eco Toys'.  The toy range is fabulous and everytime you purchase a recyclable or organic toy, you know that you have contributed a little to saving this amazing planet that quite ironically is for the future of your children.

To see the full range of 'Green' toys and childrens products go to www.muddkids.com.au, www.ecobabe.com.au, and www.ecotoys.com.au.

Babybrain Organiser
23rd January 2010

How many times have you heard someone say..'Sorry...I have Pregancy Brain" after they have forgotten something? Well I have to say this was quite a regular phrase across my three pregnancies and also for some time after the birth.

Some researchers suggest that the reason for the decline in auditory memory is suspected to be poor-quality sleep as women become more uncomfortable through the night with their growing baby and more frequent toilet stops. Although some may believe that 'Pregnancy Brain' is a myth, there are many of us that who would disagree and know that with a little assistance from something that jogs our memory, we may be able to function a little more normally (with or without more sleep).

Enter the Babybrain Organiser! The only Australian mum's organiser complete with a mum-friendly, journal style diary and calendar. It's more than just a diary as it lets you record your baby's patterns to establish a routine and use these routines to plan your time. It also has tabs to record information and immunisations as well as handy phone numbers for parenting helplines in your state.

To ensure that you as a mother are looking after yourself, there is a checklist called 'My Nutrition' that records the number of servings of the five important food groups a day. Best of all the Babybrain diary prompts you to enter 'me time' each day as many mums forget to give themselves timeout.

The only tab that I may tend to flick over is the domestic tab that records any housekeeping you need to do, although this is something that I definitely need to schedule in on a weekly basis. The Babybrain organiser is A5 in size, comes in white and tan and is priced at $55.00.

For more information on the Babybrain organiser go to www.babybrain.com.au.

Ollie Rose
21st January 2010

I have always dreaded going to a baby shower/ child's birthday party and finding out that I have purchased a gift that someone else has purchased. So far it hasn't happened but to alleviate the chance of this happening, Ollie Rose is the perfect choice of unique handmade gifts for your little one.

Ollie Rose is a one stop shop for all things cute; clothing, art, homewares and accessories and being handmade in Carnarvon WA, the designs are unique and limit the risk of looking like the other pre-school kids.

The range of products are extensive and you will have trouble picking only one item. There are so many lovely items, you will be distracted by the wide selection of beautiful products. I have to say how much I love the Babushka and Giraffe Rattles. The perfect size for small hands with the added ribbon loops for sensory and visual stimulation.

Ollie Rose is run by two mums (and sisters) Kobi and Jemma who decided to create unique pieces of clothing that weren't seen on every other child. First launched in 2007, the range has grown quickly and are all made by work at home mums ensuring quality handmade pieces.

Little Billies Back to School Packs
19th January 2010

The other day I bought a family diary to try and get organised in 2010. My intentions usually start off well but when things get busy, I usually become disorganised.
To ensure that my children don't follow in my footsteps (you should see my filing or lack there of) routines are perfect to get children into the habit of getting organised.

Little Billies has created a Back to School Pack for the littlies to assist with organisation in 2010. Each pack comes with three organisation charts including 'My Morning', 'My Evening' and 'My Week'.

  • My Morning and Evening Charts- The chart is two 29cm x 11cm sized magnets  that comes personalised with child's name, gender and colour preference. It includes 48 activity magnet stickers specifying typical family routines such as eat meals, brush hair, clean teeth, tidy toys and many more.
  • My Week Chart-  includes activities for the week including, play date, school excursion, birthdays, family outing etc.

Little Billies currently have a special offer on their 'Back to School Packs' where you can currently purchase the three charts for $35.15 which is 20% off the RRP.
At such a great price these charts are even more appealing knowing that they are assisting in creating a well organised and hopefully harmonious start and end to the day. To purchase one of the 'Back to School Pack' go to www.littlebillies.net.au or www.bonitobaby.com.au. But hurry as the offer is only valid until the 5th February 2010.

For those school teachers out there, make sure you check out the new classroom range that has been recently launched.

The Learn 2 Surf Strap
14th January 2010

With beautiful coastal beaches from Swansea to Port Stephens, Newcastle has always had a large beach culture. Funnily enough I have never really been into the surf beaches and would prefer to pack the family up and sit by and swim in the beautiful flat water at Port Stephens.

If you are a surfer and would like to get your kids involved in your interest using a safety device that has been tried and tested to the Australian Safety Standards specifications, The Learn 2 Surf Strap is for you.

The Learn 2 Surf Strap is a floatation style* device (shaped like a mini surfboard and is approx 39.5cm high) that allows the parent to grab and assist the child when moving from the face down position to the standing position. The device is made from EVA foam and has a polypropylene handle and belt.  When in use it is positioned tightly below the child's tummy and the handle is used to stablise the child. View demonstration HERE.

The Learn 2 Surf Strap comes with an 8 page demo mag and is priced at $39.95 plus $8.00 postage and handling.
*Please note that in the interest of safety, The Learn 2 Surf Strap should not be used as a floatation device in the waves of the ocean without assitance and adult supervision. It is recommended by the manufacturer that when using this device, the child should be able to stand with both feet on the ocean floor.

To purchase the Learn 2 Surf Strap or to view further information about the product go to www.learn2surfstrap.com.au.

Ickle Kids
12th January 2010

We have stayed at home these holidays for a number of reasons but one in particular is the scary thought of travelling with kids. Arrrgghhh! A half hour journey in the car usually ends up in the 16 month year old getting fed up as she is at a difficult age to entertain and the other two fighting. A journey to Sydney even seems like a huge task.

A friend of mine has just completed an international trip back to the UK with two children under 3.  We have to do this trip at some stage as my husband still has immediate family back in the UK, but we have always said when the kids are older (well...old enough to take advantage of the inflight entertainment). We tried the trip when my 6 year old was 11 months and he was crawling at the time so yes..it proved hard and we only had one child then.

Ickle Kids is a fabulous website that was created to alleviate the stress that goes along with kids and travel. Ickle Kids offer a range of toys and activity packs that will keep your kids entertained in any situation where boredom may set in. Flights, car and train travel, dining out, shopping and waiting rooms are all situations where Ickle Kids toys can assist.

Each travel activity pack contains a selection of handpicked fun and educational travel toys for busy mums, dads and carers to just "grab and go". The products are very affordable with sticker play scenes starting at $8.99. For more information or to see the full range of Ickle products go to www.icklekids.com.au.

Tea Pony
4th January 2010

I have mentioned before my love for little 'girly girl' clothing. Clothing that is pretty and innocent in it's style and design. Clothing that allows little girls to be little girls in every way and 'Tea Pony' is one brand that falls into this category.

'Tea Pony-Little Vintage' was founded by Esa West and Luke Cooper in their home town of Byron Bay after the birth of their daughter Coco. Coming from a work background in garment production, designing and with a diploma in pattern making, Esa launched her own company, 'Tea Pony', after looking for unique outfits for her child. Each garment is designed by Esa, made by machine and finished by hand by skilled professionals ensuring the quality to be of high standards.

With a love of vintage designs and fabrics, Esa create unique one offs, transforming old school fabric into new school styles. Each design is made with comfort in mind using the best quality fabrics for your little one.

The Belle and Boo  Lost Girl Dress is my absolute favourite and would look so sweet on my Tilly. It is priced at $69.95 and is available in sizes 3 months to 4 years. To view all the 'Tea Pony' designs or to purchase this sweet little dress go to www.teapony.com.

Belle and Boo-Ava Rosemeyer Prints
2nd January 2010

You may remember my post on the 5th of November about Child safety during summer. Just to refresh you memory Ava Rosemeyer was a three year old who ventured off to look for lollies in her parents car on a hot day and tragically lost her life when she locked herself in and when found 30 minutes later couldn't be revived although still breathing.

I still feel very emotional about this accident as it could happen to any one of us. Thus why Ava's parents ask all parents to follow AVA's RULE. ALWAYS lock your car and store your keys out of reach, VERIFY your children know never to go into the car unsupervised, ACTIVELY seek out sheltered positions to park your car.

Two years ago, Ava's parents approached the incredibly talented English lllustrator Mandy from BELLE and BOO to complete a series of illustrations that reflected special moments in Ava's life. These prints can be ordered through www.larkmade.com.
Each print is signed by the artist and is mounted onto soft white board. The prints are presented in a cello sleeve with a pretty band and certificate. Medium sized prints are priced at around $90.

The prints are made to order and 3-4 weeks should be allowed for delivery. Ava's parents are happy to think that Ava's beautiful image is hanging in homes around the world. Around 350 have been sold to date.
It is also a wonderful reminder to be vigilant when it comes to child safety in 2010.

Identi Kid-Dummy Dots
22nd December

We have always used dummies on our children for one reason or another and it has always been quite a smooth transition when it is time to hand them over.
We try to regulate them for sleeps only or if she is tired which also saves on confusion in social situations where there is a plethora of dummies in various children's mouths.

The other day we went to my sister's house without a dummy and at one point I turned around to see my neice's dummy in my daughter's mouth. Nothing like building up the immunity in kids!

One such product that can now alleviate this confusion is the 'Dummy Dots' from Identi Kid.
The 'Dummy Dots' can now be identified by a small sticker with your child's initials and a small picture stuck to your child's dummy. The stickers come in a pack of 20 stickable dots are made to fit most brands of dummies. You can buy a pack of Dummy Dots for $15 from Identi Kid. To purchase or to see the great range of other Identi Kid products go to www.identikid.com.au

Tacker Tracker
14th December

The crowds at the major retail outlets at this time of year are getting busier and busier and I'm always worried that my kids may be separated from me in the busy hustle and bustle of racing around for that last minute gift.
My eldest could give more detail of his identity than the middle child but it would take a lot for the authorities to find us.

Townmouse
12th December

I know I tend to go on about 'Wholesome' children's clothing but this is one brand that clearly defines that term. I love seeing little girls dressed as little girls and even little boys not dressed in licensed products or skateboarding paraphenalia all the time.

Townmouse offers beautiful and quality made children's wear in natural fibres from ages 0-8 years. The clothes have a French flavour and draw on classic designs. The girl's range can be described as feminine and pretty whilst the boys range is classic without all the trimmings.

Townmouse was created by Kristine Lempriere, mum of four, who's credentials in pattern making and dressmaking hold her in high stead for creating such beautiful designs. The fabrics are the best quality with the fabric patterns chosen contribute to an exquisite range of children's clothing.

I love the Peter Pan collars and bows used on many of the products to add that something special to the designs. You may not know but I am a fabric junkie and adore anything created that uses good quality fabric and patterns in children's clothing.

I couldn't stop reading the Townmouse blog as I was lost in reading all the little stories of how Kristine would use her husband's old Thomas Pink Business Shirts (gush gush) to make her daughter an exquisite dress when the shirt was wearing thin. (NB: If you are familar with Thomas Pink you will know that only the best fabrics and patterns are used. We still have shirts here from many years ago that have lasted from past business life...they last forever!)

My Creative Little Furnishings
5th December

The other day my kids asked me to measure them to see how much they had grown. We used to have a measuring chart years ago but it was lost in our move and was very dog eared in the end. Apart from our 'Blue Books' we don't have a record the children's growth over time and in the end keeping up the information in the 'Blue Book' was becoming more infrequent.

My Creative Little Furnishings has created a growth chart that is fail proof and it looks gorgeous. A special keepsake for your child that has been handcrafted in one of four different styles (2 boys and two girls). They keep a regular record of height from birth through to 12 years of age with a photograph to mark each growth milestone. (age cards and clear protective sleeves with adhesive are supplied for you to attach a photo of the child to the chart as they grow).

The growth chart is crafted using a deep edge triple primed canvas and quality materials making it a lasting keepsake. The growth chart is priced at $165.00 and can be purchased from http://www.madeit.com.au/mycreative. Go to the madeit store to see the other products available.

Little Critters
25th November

Are you looking for that something special and unique for loved ones for Christmas?
Little Critters is the perfect keepsake for anyone that loves treasured memories. It's also perfect for someone that has everything.

Owned and operated by work at home mum, Carol Heath, Little Critters was inspired by an art activity that she created at her son's playgroup.
The designs have evolved since that first artwork and have since been created using photoshop where canvas prints, mugs, mousemats and many more items are produced using the hand print of your child.

The concept involves sending a hand or footprint of your child/ren, choosing a design from the design gallery and leaving Carol to do the rest. Your artwork is produced and within weeks is returned in a stunning keepsake. A perfect gift for grandma for Christmas!

For more information on prices and to purchase go to www.littlecritters.com.au

Mooo-Personalised Artwork
15th November

In 2004 we travelled to the UK for a relative's wedding. Thomas was only 11 months at the time but braved the big trip to introduce him to the family at one big family event.
The after wedding event that was scheduled the next day for the village was just as spectacular as the wedding the night before. (My husband still thinks the Robbie Williams cover band was actually Robbie himself!)

At this event they had hired The Roving Artist (http://www.roving-artist.com/alison/index.html) to silhouette cut out the profile of guests at this event. We were so lucky to get a silhouette cut of Thomas' profile when he was such a young age and we will treasure this little memory forever.

Now, being such a unique skill to posess which dates back to the 17th Century, I haven't come across anything like this in Australia until now and although it isn't hand cut silhouettes, it still captures the profile of a person at that moment in time..creating a wonderful keepsake.

Mooo.com.au creates wonderful personalised canvasses including the Silhouette Canvas Art. All you have to do it you take the photo and Mooo will recreate it in artwork. The canvasses are custom made in their studios and the artworks are printed direct to canvas. Two sizes are available; 30cm x 30cm and 60cm x 60cm and start from $75.00. It's a perfect gift for Christmas when you are looking for something a little unique and special. Go to www.mooo.com.au to see more information on Silhoutte canvas art and other products available from Mooo.com.au.

Peggy
11th November

There are a handful of children's clothing designers I have to rate in my top five purely because of the fabrics they use in their product range. I am a strong believer that the fabric is the main ingredient in a child's fashion item.
Today I stumbled across one such designer that not only creates beautiful and stylish children's designs but uses the most exquisite fabrics in the process.

Peggy was created out of a need for affordable , easy wearing but pretty baby girls (6 months-2 years) clothes. The Summer 09 range featured vintage inspired prints in beautifully complementing colours on woven cotton. Peggy was named after the Melbourne Designer's Grandmother and aims to keep an air of 'old fashioned whimsicality' in it's gorgeous designs.
The range features dresses, nappy covers and hats all of which can be mixed and matched for a quirky boho effect.

Unfortunately the bad news is they don't have an online store, however according to their stockist page, 'Rosie's Closet" in The Junction (shop 16/10 Kenrick St The Junction) stocks this beautiful brand. If you have no luck there, go to www.peggy.com.au for more information on their stockists or to see their full range of products.

Costumes for Kids
30th October

On the eve of Halloween, I thought we would get into the spirit and show you the best children's costumes I have seen.

My Make Believe is the exclusive retailer of Tom Arma's childrens range of costumes from the States. Each costume is made from the highest quality fabrics, they are all fully lined and come in a variety of themes such as Christmas, Halloween and Animal costumes. Check out the Gingerbread Man who looks good enough to eat.

Prices start at $95 for 6-12 months, $100 for 12-24 months $105 for 3-5 years. Can't you just picture your little one in the Santa Claus suit on Christmas Day? For more information or to purchase one of these adorable costumes, go to www.mymakebelieve.com.au.

We have never been a big country of Halloween but have just moved into a new street where apparently a lot of the children tend to go trick or treating. My husband has threatened to buy a big padlock for the gate (in gest), but our kids are intrigued by the prospect of Halloween and the number of lollies they could attain by going from house to house saying trick or treat. I don't think they are too crash hot on the whole idea of dressing up in scary costumes, but free lollies...well that's another matter.

If you decide at the last minute to send the kids out to collect the loot, Sparty's is the place to get some last minute Halloween attire. You can pick up masks, costumes and accessories that assist in the transformation process. Spartys is located within Spotlight at 711 Hunter St Newcastle, or Tenancy 5, 366 New England Highway Rutherford.

The Baby Shop
www.babyshop.com.au
27th October 2009

More and more mums are becoming timepoor with all the daily duties they need to fit into their lives so the idea of browsing or window shopping sometimes proves impossible.
The Baby Shop is one business that caters for the mums who have more time to shop and like to view the products first hand in the Baby Shop shopfront in Adamstown and those mums who have time to shop online using their extensive virtual shopfront www.babyshop.com.au.

The Baby Shop has an extensive range of baby products from babywraps to car seats and a large range of maternity wear and accessories. It's a one stop shop for all your baby, toddler and mum-to-be needs.

The Baby Shop is owned by Newcastle mum of two Alisa Crook who's baby business celebrates 11 years in business this month. Being a family owned and run business (you will often find Alisa serving customers and wrapping parcels), The Baby shop is in touch with the needs of the customers and provides a large selection of options when seeking  particular products.

To make life a little easier for mums, The Baby Shop offers a free delivery service using the Baby Shop 'Baby Taxi' for orders of $75 and over. This is great to courier those must need  items like nappies, formula and wipes to you when you just can't bring yourself to venture out to the supermarket to battle with the crowds. This is great option to consider getting closer to Christmas when you just want to avoid the shopping centres.

To purchase and to view the extensive range of products The Baby Shop has to offer, go to www.babyshop.com.au or visit their store at 276 Brunker Rd Adamstown.

The Tooth Fairy Store
25th October 2009

I couldn't resist a light and fluffy ABC Daily tonight.

Tonight my 3 year old came over to me and said "Mummy, when am I going to loose a tooth?" After I explained to her it would be after her brother (who is the probably the only child in Kindy who hasn't lost any teeth yet), she then went on to complain and question why Thomas had to go first all the time.

The intial question started me thinking about how we were going to approach the tooth fairy thing and most importantly what is the going rate these days for baby teeth? My sister is giving gold coins which means by the end of my nephew losing all his milk teeth she could potentially be out of pocket $40. Whoa..I'm sure I only got 20 cents a tooth! Now that's inflation.
Well I guess the tooth fairy has to factor in GST and  tooth disposal fees.

A cute website I stumbled across is The Tooth Fairy store where you can purchase customised tooth fairy kits. The kits include personalised tooth fairy cards with child's name with a 'What a wonderful tooth' message, 2 x jars of fairy dust and a how to spread the magic instruction. The Tooth Fairy Kit comes in packs of 4,8 and 12 personalised notelets and are priced at $14.95, $19.95 and $24.95 respectively. Check out the cute Wobbly Tooth letter as well.

For more information or to purchase these cute kits go to www.thetoothfairy.net.au

Love Mae Wall Decals
23rd October 2009

I have to say how obsessed I am about wall decals.
When we moved, I searched for weeks looking for the perfect wall dressing for the kid's bedrooms. I wanted wallpaper and I had something very specific in mind but for the life of me, there is nothing available that is simple, stylish and most of all affordable.

For Matilda's room I ended up ordering wallpaper from the UK (which we are still yet to put up). There is just something a little scary about applying wallpaper. I'm envisaging wallpaper and wallpaper paste from one end of the room to another.
So in the end for other two children's rooms we opted for wall decals..and they just look fabulous!

One wall decal company that designs the most beautiful vintage style designs is'Love Mae'.  Unlike most wall decals that are made out of vinyl, 'Love Mae' is made from fabric and are removable and completely reusable. These decals are so durable that they can be scrunched into a ball and will easily unscrunch and re-apply to walls many times over.

'Love Mae's' whimsical designs include, Forest Critters, Babushkas, Dainty Toadstools, Dress Up Dolls and recently launched the gorgeous Christmas tree for the festive season. This tree can be used all year round. All you have to do is remove the candy canes and baubles for an every day decorative wall decal.
The full range can be purchased online at www.thehipinfant.com.au. Price start at $39.95 and go up to $159.95.

My son officially starts Nippers this Sunday and as he is a  pale english rose I am fully aware of the necessity of good beach protection.

Funnily enough, we have searched high and low for a high UPFsun rating long sleeve rash vest and I can't believe how hard it is to find them two months into Spring.
One company that makes the most  gorgeous and protective beach wear is one of our competition sponsors- Tkxi Surf. The 09/10 range is now available and includes a selection of graphics that children can identify with including, puppy's, ladybeetles, doves and surfboards.

Memories
15th October

Today six years ago at 7.15am my son was born. It is hard to think that we have shared six years of wonderful (and sometimes trying) times with him. He was the first born so when we unpacked our photo albums when we moved, we pulled out three baby albums of him, 1 of should I say half of Isobel and nothing printed yet of Matilda.

Why is it we lapse as each subsequent child comes along? Is it lack of time? It's certainly not lack of interest.

I made the decision to get some family photographs done recently (which I can't wait to show you the wonderful works of Jinky Art Photography) as I knew that there wouldn't be too many times in our lives that we would all get dressed up and have a memory taken that will last forever.

I feel like  a terrible mother as I started to fill out their baby books with good intention but somehow stopped along the way.
I also always thought I would stamp them feet when they were born as memories of how little they were but never did. I had thought about doing all this for our last addition but then thought I couldn't do it as I hadn't done it for the others. So memories at this point in time are all we have....but are still very much in the forefront of my mind!

If you do want keepsakes of your little ones lives, here are a couple of local businesses you may be interested in;

Yunginz Kid's Shoes (pronounced 'young-ins')
13th October

Today being a warmer day, my nephews were sporting a new pair of summer shoes. My poor son is currently at the end of his current sandals and with a 13 and 1/2 month old who is about to walk anyday, it looks like I could be up for three pairs of shoes. Usually this is a very expensive exercise as we try to buy the best quality shoes for the growing feet of the littlies but not anymore with a range of afforable and supportive kid's shoes available at Yunginz.

Yunginz (pronounced young-ins) was created and designed by two mums Jenny Celebrin and Yolanda La Gorce, when they felt the children's shoe market was lacking comfortable, affordable and trendy shoes for little ones smaller than a size 12.

It was important for Jenny and Yolanda to create shoes that fitted comfortably and supported the foot as the foot grew. All shoes have full arch support and others include ankle support and toe reinforcement.

To celebrate the launch of their Spring/Summer 09/10 range, Yunginz is offering you a free pair of shoes with each purchase from their new Spring/Summer 09/10 collection, available from the stable of the Yunginz shoe range. All you have to do is purchase a pair of shoes directly from Yunginz or from a Yunginz stockist (see website for details) and you have a choice of one of the three pairs pictured above free of charge. This is certainly value for money and with a large selection of sandals, canvas shoes and 'good shoes', the hardest thing will be deciding which pair to buy! Hurry offer ends Feb 2010 or while stocks last.

For more information or to purchase from the extensive range of high quality and affordable shoes go to www.yunginz.com.au

We love Gaia Organic Cotton!
Summer 09/10
9th October

As I sit here typing in my winter woolies, it is hard to think about summer clothing based on the chilly weather we have had over the past week. But I guess, that is the beauty of the internet. You can escape to a whole world of wonderful clothing stores without venturing outside in the cold snapping you back to reality.

We have featured Gaia previously on Alphabet Street but I couldn't resist showing you a few items you have to be aware of for summer.
Gaia Cotton Organic creates timeless, unique and inspired designs with a conscience. Made from certified organic cotton materials, Gaia's designer baby and children's wear not only embraces the innocence of childhood with it's sweet and whimsical designs but also adheres to a business philosophy of environmental and social responsibilty.

There are so many styles to choose from in the Gaia Organic Cotton Baby and Child ranges but my favourites have to be the 'Sweet Cherub' and the 'Sprinkles' range.
'Sweet Cherub' is the delightfully bright red summer floral that has been made into; 'Dress all in one', 'Smock Top' (pictured above), 'Babydoll Dress', 'Ruffle Bloomer' and 'Rug'( pram blanket).

My favourite 'Sprinkles' range comes in 'Singlet' and 'Babydoll' dresses, 'Rug' (pram blanket) and the outfit I WILL be getting for my little Matilda is the 'Babydoll Top' (RRP $39.95) with matching 'Pantalon'(RRP $36.95) pictured above.

Although the gorgeous summer range is available online or through David Jones, don't forget the Newcastle clearance studio at Level 1 144 Parry St Newcastle West, where you can pick up some wonderful baby essentials at reduced prices. The studio is open Thurs-Sat 10am till 3pm.

Ani and Trio Baby Bedding
25th August 2009

I had always thought it was tough when shopping around for nursery bedding until now. When I was looking for my littlies there was never anything as beautiful as the cot bedding made by Ani and Trio.

Ani and Trio (Anita Siiankoski and Triona Fitzpatrick), two friends from Queesnland (and both mums to be) have just launched their new range of "Bedtime Story Collection" baby bedding.
The bedding theme revolves around the night time ritual of story telling. Ani and Trio believe that story time is extremely important in encouraging a child's imagination and instead of using words in story telling their latest bedding collection revolves around the fabric to tell the story. Bright colours and patterns will introduce your child to the world of colour and shapes.

The NEW Story Book collection comes in four themes including; Sugar and Spice, Sleeping Scallywags, Good Morning Birdie and Buttercup Bliss.

All Bedtime Story quilts are diamond quilted, machine washable and filled with 100% organic cotton batting. Prices range from $79.95 for a mini quilt and $149.95 for a large quilt. For more information or to order beautiful baby bedding go to www.aniandtrio.com.au.

Newcastle featured business-Babeaze
21st August 2009

Where else could you find the most innovative children's products in Australia? And they are right here in Newcastle!

Babeaze specialises in baby and children's products that are unique, practical and often invented by parents. Run by two mums, Tracey Laverick and Anne-Maree Green, who saw a hole in the market for innovative, yet practical baby and kid's products. As mums themselves, they new the challenges they had to face in parenthood, and decided to source products that would assist with these challenges making life a little easier.

Baby and kid's products have been sourced all over the world and brought to Australia where you can only find them on the Babeaze website. I have had the pleasure to buy off this website and highly recommend the products they are selling (plus they are lovely to deal with).

Some amazing products to look out on this website to assist with the "little people" challenges are;

  • The Mac and Cool quick cooling dish- I have bought this and it's such a blessing when you have a hungry child but a hot meal. This is a bowl that you fill with water and freeze so that when you need to cool a meal down (such as my famous shepards pie) it can be cooled within 60 seconds. It's fabulous!
  • Potty Mitts- Invented my mums, these disposable mitts are to be used in public toilets protecting them from germs. These come in a pack of 12 mitts.
  • The Teethifier- (pictured above) The teethifier is an advanced back teeth teether. Unlike current teethers which are too large to get past the front teeth, the Teethifier glides past front teeth to massage rear molars that are giving the child trouble.
  • The Wee Target- encourages boys to aim correctly when toliet training. Available in Tow truck, soccer ball, car, train and fire engine designs.
  • Baby Safe Feeder- (pictured above) reduces the risks of choking when introducing solids to babies. Simply fill the net with small pieces of fruit so baby can taste the real goodness of fresh fruit without the worry of choking. Great as a teether when filled with small cubes of ice. (We had one of these and highly recommend it)

Fiona Kate-Simply Gorgeous Storage!
17th August 2009

Trying to get the kids to clean up their bedrooms tonight was a long and agonising task. There was tears involved (yes..I came close) over packing away books, Thomas the Tank Engine trains and plastic food that belonged with the play oven. It didn't help that every time books were put away, Matilda (12 months) would come along and pull them out again. This resulted in the two older children picking her up (struggling as they are only six and three and a half themselves) and putting her out of their rooms..which of course she did not like.

Wouldn't it be great to have some super stylish storage you can throw everything into and put a lid on? Well look no further.
Fiona Kate has the most wonderful storage containers that are stylish, strong and recyclable. The storage containers are light enough for a child to carry and pack away yet tough enough to last over time from a lot of use.
The storage containers come in a few different sizes; mini, minor, medium, major and can be used time and time again for a number of uses from toys to bedding.

Fiona Kate's most recent addition to their product range includes the ever popular chalkboard products. Removable chalk dots, chalkboard labels and mini chalkboards are all very affordable at $10.95 each. The chalkboards at 30cm x 40cm are perfect for placemats or shopping lists. Labelling pantry jars has never been easier using the chalkboard labels and the chalkboard dots are perfect for keeping the kids entertained as a game of noughts and crosses or practicing letters on.

At the moment Fiona Kate is offering  Alphabet Street readers a free string bag bundle for the first 10 orders received. (Type in Alphabet at checkout) Go to www.fionakate.com.au for a great selection of gorgeous and practical storage and chalkboard products.

Babies Galore- BeSafe Pregnancy Belt
12th August 2009

I was always mindful when I was pregnant that if for some dreadful reason, I was in a car accident, my unborn child would take the full force of the seatbelt. I tried to wrap the belt around my 'bump' but it would have just snapped back into place if the car had a sudden impact. The lower part of the standard seat belt can exert extreme pressure in a car accident which can result in injury to the uterus or foetus or induce miscarriage.

Babies Galore have tried to resurrect this seat belt flaw with it's new 'BeSafe Pregnancy Belt'. BeSafe Pregnancy Belt is a revolutionary product designed to protect pregnant women and their unborn child on car trips during their pregnancy, as a driver or a passenger.

BeSafe Pregnancy Belt is a comfotable, flat cushion that fits under the mum to be and diverts the seat belt away from the baby. It has been tested on many crash dummies who were subjected to a full frontal impact of 50km/h. After the simulated crash, the dummy, the BeSafe, the video and the computer read-outs were carefully analysed and BeSafe surpassed the requirements of the ECE r 16 standards.

BeSafe Pregnancy Belt is available from Babies Galore and is priced at $99.99. Not much for complete mother and baby safety. Babies Galore is situated at Unit 1, 10-16 Medcalf St Warners Bay, 2282 NSW. For more details phone 02 4956 7788.

Competition Sponsor Spotlight-My Munchkin Home
10th August 2009

We are hoping to move into our new home in around 6 weeks time so deciding upon colour schemes when you're not too sure what rooms work for what child can be tough. We have decided to start with white initially until we are sure about noise levels from neighbouring homes, particularly with a small baby who sleeps in the daytime.

So, my mission is to colourfully accessorise the rooms with beautiful decor.

My Munchkin Home is the perfect place to start with giant removable wall decals. My Munchkin Home was created by mum and designer Amanda Evans who had a desire to make a special room for her new baby.
After an extensive research in removable wall decals, Amanda could not find anything that suited and therefore My Munchkin Home was created.

Wall decals are perfect when trying to create a cost efficient room that changes with different ages. They are also ideal if you are renting and are not allowed to paint or decorate your children's room.

My Munchkin Home's removable wall decals have been designed to inspire imagination and creativity with it's whimsical range of designs including the magic tree house, giant pirate ship and princess castle. If you are an Alphabet Street newsletter subscriber, you have an opportunity of winning the new birdhouse branch design decal valued at $49.95 in our August competition.

Gaia Organic Cotton-Newcastle featured business
9th August 2009

The Gaia Cotton Organic philosophy is all about environmental and ethically sound principles and is made from 100% certified organic cotton.

Created seven years ago by mum and designer, Annette Francis, Gaia Organic Cotton baby wear is inspired by the whimsical joys of childhood. Annette aims to design garments that delight in form, touch and style and believe me they just feel so deliciously soft.
Not only are Gaia's garments stylish and durable, they are most importantly environmentally friendly.

Whilst most cotton is farmed using heavy dose of insecticides and chemicals in the manufacturing process, organic cotton is pest monitored through the release of beneficial insects and weed control is mantained with mechanical or hand-hoeing techniques. Thus being  far more friendly to the environment.

Gaia has a range of 'ready to wear' and cotton 'basics' as well as the seasonal designs each year.
As well as a very comprehensive online store, Gaia now has a clearance studio that is open to the public in Newcastle. This is an opportunity to pick up part season products, seconds and samples in sizes 0000-4. The studio is located  at 144 Parry Street Newcastle West and is open to the public Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 10am-3pm.

Little Lighthouse
5th August 2009

We are coming to the pointy end of the deal with our new home. The gyprockers are in giving it more of a sense of space so as I survey the daily work I start dreaming about the most important part of the house...the interior decoration and accessories.

We are very lucky this month to have Little Lighthouse as one of our monthly competition sponsors.

Little Lighthouse manufactures the most gorgeous lampshades and is run by mum of two Sue Jackson. The inspiration behind this succesful business was created from the lack of beautiful, co-ordinating lampshades available in the market place. With Sue's background in soft furnishings and her love of fabrics, Little Lighthouse was born providing people like myself beautiful lampshades to co-ordinate with any childs room.

I have decided that navy and red with be the accessory colours in my son's room so the last thing I needed was a matching lamp. It didn't take me long to decide..I fell in love instantly. STARS-NAVY AND WHITE. Done, purchased and ready to add to the room. Although, reality is...we are still such a loooonnnnggg way off from adding the finishing details to the rooms that my gorgeous Stars-navy and white lampshade will have to stay boxed a little longer before I can admire it everyday.

Lampshades start from $59.95 with co-ordinating bases from $50.00 and can be bought at www.littlelighthouse.com.au. Or if there are any questions speak to Sue on 0421 855 398...she is really nice!

Competition Sponsor Spotlight-Babyjo
31st July 2009

As a child (and still to this day on the odd occasion) I had a very bad case of eczema. There were many days my arms were wrapped in bandages to stop me from scratching or I had scratched and my arms so they needed to heal. It's a terrible skin ailment to have. My parents tried everything, GP's, Dermatologists, Specialists and nothing seemed to work. I was told after several tests that I was one of the most allergic kids in Newcastle and instead of the norm being around 100, I was over 1000. Great, basically I was allergic to everything..even the wind.

Many parents these days are very cautious on what they give their babies to eat, wash in and now dress them in. Organic is the BIG word these days shying away from processed manufactured goods that aren't natural.
Did you know that Bamboo is becoming a very popular material for clothing. It has some great qualities including; Organically grown, eco-friendly, 100% bio-degradable, UV protectant, more breathable and absorbant than cotton and is great for allergy sufferers including eczema.

Babyjo was created by Jo Harvey, a mum, who was concerned that her 5 month old baby's eczema may be irritated by the clothing she was wearing. Jo searched for clothing that may assist in alleviating this problem and stumbled across bamboo fibres. After reading about the wonderful benefits bamboo has to offer, Jo decided to create her own range of environmentally friendly bamboo clothing for little ones.

The range includes a selection of soft rompers and pyjamas for delicate skin as well as singlets, bodysuits and blankets. It's earthy tones compliment the eco-friendly and sustainable clothing. It not only appeals to mums who are looking for clothing that has health benefits to their babies but are also assisting the enviroment with their smart choice of bamboo products. Go to www.babyjo.com.au for a beautiful selection of baby clothing and gifts.

Newcastle featured business-Huggalugs
18th July 2009

If you had said to me that I should buy a pair of leg warmers for my kids, the visions that pop into my head are Olivia Newton-John in her 'Let's get Physical' video clip or Irene Cara's 'What a Feeling' video clip.
Haven't things changed over two decades. They are actually now made for children and they are extremely popular, practical and most importantly fashionable.
Huggalugs is a Newcastle based business and is owned and created by mum of two Elizar Mytka.

The first Huggalugs product launched was Huggalugs Leg Huggers, leg warmers which can be used on both legs and arms, for babies and children in early 2006.

After searching high and low for leg warmers for littlies, Elizar became frustrated with what was and what was not available in the way of leg warmers for babies and children.  As it was apparent that no style or size was favourable for her daughter's thighs, Elizar road tested several design concepts on her own family and friend's children to determine a shape that would be universal to a range of different shaped babies and children.
Huggalugs has added several product ranges to the Huggalugs brand including; 100% Australian organic cotton t-shirts, bump huggers maternity wear and the gorgeous and feminine Huggalugs Legruffles.

Not only do the Leg Huggers and Legruffles make an extremely fashionable accessory to any outfit, they are practical for easy to apply to arms and legs when the weather turns cool, great for children who are toilet training and don't have to pull them down and also protect when the mozzies come to visit. For more information or to purchase visit www.huggalugs.com.au

Tat your tot

Newcastle featured business-Flirty Bird
23rd July 2009

We are extremely lucky to have Flirty Bird Hair accessories as one of our monthly competition sponsors this month. This should be a large incentive to sign up to our newsletter to go into the draw to win a gorgeous selection of Flirty Bird's hair accessories boxed in a small suitcase.

Flirty Bird is owned and designed by Newcastle mum Michelle Nicholson and was created from a love of hair accessories as a child to compliment her long, thick brown hair.

The choice of fabrics used in her designs are very vintage and cute with a selection of cheeky cherries, gorgeous spots and stripes, and even a fairy tale theme with the cute 'three little pigs' ponies.
Flirty Bird's designs come in a selection of pony tail holders, bobby pins and snap clips, headbands and even jewellery. Prices range from approx. $7.60 for a set of pony tail holders to $12.95 for a new addition to the Flirty Bird family- a ribbon clip.

Emperor’s Laundry
8th July 2009

As mums become more time poor, the world of online shopping calls to us to assist in providing an alternative to leaving the house with three kids in tow to fight for a park at the nearest shopping centre. (Boy..just writing it makes me cringe…)  The ABC CD of greatest songs can only keep them interested for a short period of time until fights break out and frustration sets in. Reverse and head for home!

You will often find me on the computer searching for new children’s products including fashion, shoes and toys. One fantastic website I stumbled upon was www.emperorslaundry.com.au.

The word that really sums up this gorgeous brand is innocent. A word, that really appeals to me when relating it to children. Yes, it’s classic, stylish, and well made but innocent is the word that I have chosen as the clothing designs are designs that allow children to be children.  This is one brand I can recommend for anyone who likes to dress their children age appropriately.

The Emperor’s Laundry is run and owned by three mums in Canberra who are all as equally as talented as the next.
Last week I decided to purchase a selection of summer items from their online store as I know that one spell of hot weather and my children will have nothing to wear.  The hardest problem for me was to know when to stop adding to cart.

I was so excited to receive my items in the post; the Audrey dress will look amazing on Isobel and the Tulip dress, divine on Matilda. The packaging was amazing…each individually boxed in it’s own apple green box, tied up with beautiful ribbon and a vinyl lollipop attached.

A truly gorgeous website and children’s brand I can honestly say I will visit time and time again.

Mummy Went To Market
5th July 2009

Today I was treated to a fresh fruit and vegie box from 'Mummy Went to Market'. What a treat!

As more mums become time poor, the thought of just popping to the shops for some fresh fruit and veg with three children is becoming more and more difficult. If you are lucky enough to get a park and survive the trip into your local fruit and vegie store, you often end up disappointed by the quality of the fruit and vegetable once you cut it open.
This is where Stacey and Kellie step in. Stacey and Kellie are two 'mumpreneurs ' who decided to start a business that would assist mums like themselves in providing their children quality fruit and vegetable at a reasonable cost.
Each week, they are up early and off to the markets while you get to stay home... They select a variety of quality produce that has been delivered fresh to the markets that morning, and then carefully pack each box by hand with delivery that same afternoon.

The boxes come in three convenient sizes: Half box $20 / Full box $35 / Family box $50 and are packed with premium quality staples such as potatoes, onions, carrots, zucchini, corn, tomatoes, apples and bananas as well as other seasonal varieties...They also include free range eggs!

Mummy Went to Market also offer new parent boxes. As we all know it just isn't possible to head out with a newborn so many news mums would be very appreciative of a new parent gift box. New parent boxes come with a blue or pink ribbon and a gift card attached.
Another opportunity to utilse this fantastic service is their fundraising program. This is a great way to promote healthly eating in schools and home so avoid the chocolate box fundraisers and head to www.mwtm.com.au for more information.
