It’s that time of year again when budding artists aged between 5 & 18 are invited to participate in the Art Gallery of NSW’s Young Archie competition. Mirroring the Archibald competition children will submit a portrait either of yourself or someone who is special to you – someone who is known to you and plays a significant role in your life.
Beginning in 2013, this annual competition is judged by the Gallery’s senior coordinator of education and family programs and a guest judge, based on merit and originality.
There are four age categories:
- 5-8 year olds
- 9-12 year olds
- 13-15 year olds
- 16-18 year olds
Entrants can only enter once and can use any material they like including paint, pencil, oil pastel, crayon and collage, as long as the artwork is dry, has no sharp edges and doesn’t sit higher than 1cm above the surface of the paper.
Five finalists from each category will be exhibited at the Gallery and on the Gallery website and one winner will be chosen in each category. Artworks that received an honourable mention are displayed on the Gallery website and at the SH Ervin Gallery in the Rocks alongside the Salon des Refusés.
Each of the four winners will receive: a cash prize of $100 from ANZ, an art hamper from S&S valued at at least $150, a family pass to a paid exhibition at the Gallery (valued at at least $40), and an Archibald 17 catalogue (valued at $16) – total prize value is $306.
Each of the remaining 16 finalists will receive: an art pack from S&S valued at at least $25 and an Archibald 17 catalogue (valued at $16) – total prize value $41.
Entries must be received before 4 June 2017, 5pm
