Every fan of the Mary Poppins 1964 movie starring Julie Andrews, is waiting with baited breath to see how the sequel ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ will stack up against the original 54 years later.
Disney has kept a lot of the movies details under wrap but recently launched the official teaser trailer on the 4th March. What we know about the movie so far is detailed below.
What’s the plot?
Firstly, it’s important to know that Mary Poppins Returns is a sequel and not a remake! It will have the longest gap between sequels of any live action film accruing 54 years between the first movie and the sequel.
Mary Poppins Returns is set in the 1930’s in London, 25 years after the original film is set. Michael Banks and his sister Jane are now adults with their own children and Michael still living in the house on Cherry Tree Lane. He lives there with his three children, Annabel, John, and George, and the housekeeper named Ellen. After Michael suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins comes back to the Banks family with street lamplighter Jack, and eccentric cousin Topsy.
American theatre director Rob Marshall who is best known for his work on Chicago, Into the Woods and the fourth chapter of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
Who has been cast?
We have known for a while that Emily Blunt of Into the Woods, The Girl on the Train and the Devil Wears Prada fame was cast as Mary Poppins, however a stellar cast of actors have also been lined up to play various other roles in the movie including;
Michael Banks: Ben Whishaw
Jane Banks: Emily Mortimer
Lin-Manuel Miranda: Jack the lamp lighter
Angela Lansbury: The Balloon Lady: a treasured character from PL Traver’s series of Mary Poppins children’s books
Meryl Streep: Topsy- Mary Poppin’s Cousin
Colin Firth: William Weatherall Wilkins, president of the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank
Julie Walters: Ellen
and a special cameo appearance by Dick Van Dyke as Mr. Dawes Jr. who was one of the members of the board in the London bank where George Banks worked in Mary Poppins. Van Dyke was cast as Bert the Chimney Sweep and Mr.Dawes Snr in the 1964 film.
When will it hit Australian Cinemas?
Mary Poppins Returns has a release date of the 25th December in the U.S and currently has a 1st January 2019 release date in Australia.
