The Newcastle School Holidays are here and what a fabulous time of year to get out and about during the spring holiday period. We have found some great events and activities to take the kids this September/October.

Get Outdoors

  • The Hunter Botanic Gardens are inviting families to their Nature is Fun days on the 27th Sept and the 4th October. Get back to nature and see what lives in the gardens, explore the bush, collect specimens and make a craft item to take home.
  • During the Newcastle School Holidays, the Hunter Wetlands will be running some nature based workshops including Bush Skills, Wetland Explorer Club and art and craft activities.
  • Head to Blackbutt Reserve daily during the Newcastle School Holidays where Blackbutt’s expert team will allow attendees to meet, learn about, and at times interact with, their favourite scaly, slimey friends!
  • Venture into a world of Mega Creatures and exciting rides at Hunter Valley Gardens these school holidays! Explore the gardens and discover over 40 giant Dragons, Dinosaurs and Mega Bugs plus our exciting new rides* that will entertain both parents and children alike!

Get Techie

  • Head to the Charlestown Square Apple Store these Newcastle school holidays for an exciting Kids Hour starring the galaxy’s favourite droids. Using the same code developers use every day, kids will bring Star Wars droids to life by programming simple movements, loops and more. Then they’ll design a maze and navigate their droids through the obstacles.
  • MiniSparx is a unique two-day program full of guided self-discovery and exposure to the amazing world of robotics. Aimed at children aged 8-12, we focus on capturing the imagination with graduated challenges that provide gratification at each stage. Workshops are located at TAFE Hamilton Campus.
  • Get hands on at the SLAM school holiday workshops where you can learn all about robotics, learn how to create cool interactive projects with the Arduino microprocessor and sensors or learn how to design and program games.

Get Cooking

  • Kids are going to love getting in the kitchen at The Essential Ingredient these school holidays where they have the opportunity of making TMNT Pizzas, Lady & the Tramp Spaghetti and Meatballs or Rapunzels Bread braid!
  • Learn the art of cupcake decorating at the Crown Plaza Hunter Valley these school holidays for just $10 per child.
  • The Pasta Making class returns to the Crown Plaza Hunter Valley during the Newcastle School Holidays. Learn the techniques of our Italian experts and make fresh pasta from simple, high quality ingredients.

Get Creative

  • Entertain the kids this school holidays at Empire Coffee Co with a Star Wars Craft session with Jedi Mick!
  • Bricks4Kidz have three locations where the kids can get hands on in a fun LEGO workshop these school holidays. New Lambton – St Therese’s Primary School and Belmont – Belmont North Neighbourhood Centre and The Place Charlestown will hold fun full day workshops for kids 5+.
  • The Newcastle Art Gallery is holding two fabulous art workshops during the Newcastle School Holidays. During the first week of the holidays kids will use modelling clay to make a 3D portrait and the second week children will learn about the cyanotype printing process and experiment with the arrangement of interesting shapes and details from materials, plants and objects to create a blue print of silhouette images.
  • Kids learn about axles, engineering and touch on Newtons Laws as they explore the Ferris wheel at the Newcastle Museum. They will build their favourite rides, learning how to make things spin, roll, turn and rock. They will take what they have learned to design their own thrills and challenges.
  • Get hands on at the Lake Macquarie Art Gallery for a selection of fun children’s art classes. Learn about creative bookmaking or re-use books to make art.

Get Active!

  • Don’t miss Happy Hour at Superstrike Bowling centres for $5 games per person between 9am and 10am
  • Hunter Sports Centre are inviting families to their come and try day on the 7th October. Learn more about the gymnastics programs that might be suitable for your child while having some fun in the process.

Something Special

  • You’re invited to a very special Mad Hatter’s High tea at the Novotel Hotel during the Newcastle School Holidays. The day will include our signature high tea menu with a bespoke, fairytale twist plus a glass of sparkling wine, lolly buffet, tea & coffee station, selfie station, a take home photo, games, prizes and a kids activity room.
  • The Crown Plaza Hunter Valley invites you to a very special High Tea Under the Sea during the Newcastle School Holidays. It is set to be a joyous event for the children to indulge in all manner of sweets, cupcakes, candy, sandwiches and more. There will also be live entertainment, including a magician and face painting.
  • Get ready to sparkle at Charlestown Square’s Unicorn Fair held over three magical days. Centre Court will be transformed into a rainbow and glitter-filled unicorn wonderland where you can enjoy Unicorn themed makeovers, merhcandise, food & fun!
  • Celebrate Unicorn Week at Westfield Kotara these school holidays from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 September! Come along for free face painting and balloon twisting from 10am to 2pm daily, have some sparkly messy fun at one of workshops or get your festival glitter done by our make up artist.

Get something for nothing {FREEBIES}

  • Learn how to draw your own cartoon characters with Charlestown Squares Cartoon Artist. Each child receives a free take home pack. Bookings essential and spaces are limited.
  • All day every day throughout the entire Spring School Holidays Frontline Hobbies are hosting two events that we encourage anyone and everyone to participate in. They will have both a LEGO construction zone and a DoodleArt Arts and Craft area that will be set up in the store. No entry fee’s at all and there may even be some giveaways 🙂
  • Wiggle, giggle and pop as Julie Logan Music inspires the whole family to swing, sway, dance and play your way into spring at the Newcastle Museum on the 8th October! Presented by Newcastle Youth Orchestra.
  • These school holidays come and have a splash aroundthe science of water at the Newcastle Museum.
  • If you love free craft, head to one of the Bunnings Kotara FREE kids DIY workshops these school holidays.
  • Catboy, Owlette and Gekko are heroes, who swoop into action at night, solving mysteries that arise during the day and on a mission to make things right for everyone in the world! Bring the kids to meet their favourite TV characters in-centre at Stockland Jesmond and take their photo for a life long memory for free!
  • These school holidays join Alice in Wonderland and her friends in the Enchanted Maze at Stockland Green Hills. Alice and her friends will greet the children as they begin their journey through enchantment and mystery.  The Queen of Hearts will play croquet before you venture into the maze to find the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat.

Get into Character!

  • NIDA is running a comprehensive course for committed young people in grades 3-6 during the Newcastle School Holidays. Develop performance skills including improvisation, voice and movement devising, acting and rehearsing scenes. Perform scenes at the end of the week for family and friends.
