Looking for something to do with the kids in Newcastle these winter school holidays? Check out our big list of fun things to do below…

  • Check out the Alphabet Street school holiday workshops planned over the winter school holidays. We are partnering with three great businesses to create three wonderful workshops including a Parent and Children dance class, a robotics workshop and a flower crown making workshop.
  • Catch a live stage show. The timeless charm of May Gibbs’ classic, Snugglepot & Cuddlepie, comes to life on stage for children 5-10 – and their adults – when a new Australian adaptation plays at Cessnock Performing Arts Centre. Read our review here.


  • Take a guided tour of the Hermannsburg watercolours on display in the exhibition BLACK WHITE & RESTIVE at Newcastle Art Gallery and create your own watercolour painting.
  • The Newcastle Museum is holding two workshops for kids these school holidays including a FREE science show on Tuesdays and Thursdays of the school holidays and a Mining & Crafting with LEGO workshop on Wednesdays.
  • Get away from the screens and back to nature these holidays at Hunter Wetlands. Test out your Bush Skills, have a reptile encounter with a turtle or get crafty with the sand art fun.
  • Lah-Lah is coming to Newcastle these winter holidays. Put on your stripy socks and head to the Griffith Duncan Theatre on the 13th July.

  • Snow has fallen at Hunter Valley Gardens these school holidays with this year’s Snow Time in the Garden. Build a snowman, get your ice skates on, or try out the extra long, super fast toboggan.
  • You’re invited to the the Winter Newcastle Permanent Junior Ranger Fun Day for 2 hours of environmental fun. This free event offers face painting, jumping castles, craft activities, animal displays and much more.
  • Bricks4Kidz has several locations where the kids can get hands on in a fun LEGO workshop these school holidays. Charlestown, New Lambton, Fletcher and East Maitland will hold fun full day workshops for kids 5+.
  • Pirate School returns to the Newcastle Maritime Museum on Tuesdays and Fridays during the school holidays. Learn how to be a pirate and join in the treasure hunt.
  • Bounce your way to Springloaded Trampoline Park at Gateshead these holidays for an all access area to Gymnastics, Trampolines, Inflatable obstacle course and Extreme zone & Play Centre for just $15 an hour or $25 for 2 hours.
  • Westfield Kotara is the place for FREE fun these holidays. Sid, Diego and Scrat will be appearing in their live show – Hunt for the Honeycomb Caves in the first week of the school holidays. Delta Goodrem will also be making an appearance (not performance) on the rooftop on Wednesday 6th July from 11am where she will be signing her new CD.

  • Don’t miss Happy Hour at Superstrike Bowling centres for $5 games per person between 9am and 10am.
  • Take the kids to Hunter Region Botanic Gardens on the 5th July for Children’s Discovery Day. Activities have included plant propagation, craft activities, a biodiversity display, garden tours, a botanical Treasure Hunt, and an art and photography exhibition.
  • Brickfest returns to Newcastle for another year. Builders from across NSW return for the 3rd time to display their LEGO creations.
  • Hunter Sports Centre has a Come and Try Gymnastics open day on the 9th July. Suitable for children 18 months to 8 years.
  • Catch a performance of Young People Theatres latest production Three Little Pigs. In the YPT version of The Three Little Pigs, the comedic wolf tries many different ways to gain entry into the brick house and meets lots of familiar Nursery Rhyme Characters as he tries.

  • Cool Art July comes to the Maitland Regional Art Gallery these winter holidays. Try your hand at weaving with natural materials, experiment with collage and texture or get messy in the clay play workshop. All this and more will be available during the workshop sessions.
  • Get hands on at the Lake Macquarie Art Gallery for a selection of fun children’s art classes. Choose from Fun with Fabric, Pet Portraits, Dream Weaving and many more.
  • Maitland Gaol has some wonderful school holiday activities running this July including; 150 years under Lock and Key, Discover your inner prisoner, Unlock your prisoner experience and Beanbag Cinema-Basil the Great Mouse Detective.
  • The Maitland Repertory Theatre is performing Cinderella these school holidays. Take one group of young, enthusiastic and talented actors and add a dash of humour and romance. Then beautifully weave all this together with a generous touch of magic to bring to life Michele L. Vacca’s version of the timeless favourite and always loved French tale, Cinderella.
  • The NSW National Parks are filled will fun nature activities these holidays. From Whale Watching to Aboriginal Culture, the kids will love learning in an outdoors environment.
  • Frontline Hobbies are running a FREE Make and Take Model workshop on Thursday 7th July as well as Slot Car racing daily and a LEGO building competition. See more details HERE.
  • Market Town Newcastle has a big schedule of school holiday fun planned from Princess Leia and Darth Vader theme day to Pom Pom Teddy Bear making workshop. Check out the full schedule here.
  • Stockland Jesmond is your place for FREE school holiday fun. From Monday 4th to Friday 8th July all your little master chefs can get creative in the kitchen from 10.30am until 1.30pm. There will be interactive cooking activities at Centre Court where they can use their imagination to design gorgeous cupcakes, decorate yummy biscuits and get their hands dirty with all sorts of kitchen antics!
