Winter is here and there are some fabulous events happening around the country for the whole family to enjoy. Check out some of our favourites below;

  • It’s whale season! Head to to check out the best locations along the east coast to view these spectacular creatures as they make their way to warmer waters.
  • The Winter Festival is returning under a new name in 2017. Skating At Festival is a pop-up Ice Skating Rink set up in iconic and picturesque locations around Australia. Skating At Sydney offers an entertainment precinct located on the the stunning and iconic St Mary’s Cathedral.

  • Get your skates on at Myer Sydney City for an exciting Australian department store first. Wonderland on level 6 has been transformed into an ice skating rink from the 26th May to the 16th July.
  • Check out the spectacular light installation at VIVID Sydney 2017 until the 17th June!
  • Hunt for treasure through the museum galleries by torchlight in a special family torchlight tour at the Australian National Maritime Museum.


  • Visit the Australian Museum as well as the Powerhouse Museum and Museums Discovery Centre on the last weekend in June and enjoy FREE general admission!
  • Spend an unforgettable night at the Australian Museum Dinosnore Sleepover. Get up close and personal with dinos, fossils and spiders, oh my!
  • Step back in time and relive the beauty and grandeur of the Titanic at the Titanic exhibition until September 2017. Families will enjoy interactive recreations and over 300 artefacts taken directly from the Titanic.

  • Join a Centennial Parklands Ranger for a fascinating and surprising spotlight walk to see how the park transforms when the sun goes down.
  • Watch scientists at work and join them in many hands-on activities at this year’s Science in the Swamp at Centennial Parklands
  • Australia’s only beachside ice rink returns to Bondi on the 30th June with the chance to ice skate in the sunshine or under the stars with the sound of waves in the background!


  • The Sydney Film Festival returns with another wonderful family program until the 18th June. Check out the program HERE.
  • Pack a picnic and bring the family for a weekend of fun and nostalgia at the Family Fair at Rouse Hill House & Farm!
  • Enjoy traditional activities such as medieval dancing and music, the Full Flight Birds of Prey medieval falconry display and jesters at this year’s Winterfest Sydney Medieval Fair.

  • Relax on bean bags for a outdoor screening of Ice Age 5: Collision Course as the sun sets down on Wulaba Park Waterloo.
  • Get your Einstein on at National Science Week! So many events happening around Sydney for kids and families including Science in the Swamp at Centennial Parklands and Science in the Wild at the Australian Garden Mt Annan.
  • Introduce your little one to the world of classical music with the Meet the Orchestra at Sydney Town Hall and Leichardt. The conductor and musicians lead children through each section of the orchestra and give hands on demonstration of how each instrument creates sound.
  • Get your skates on at the Smoothfm Ice Rink, Sydney’s biggest open-air rink! With so much on offer, including Sydney’s only ice slide, a dedicated kid’s rink, a brand new snow play area, and an illuminated ferris wheel, Winterlight is the place to be these July school holidays!

  • Sydney’s most popular festival for dogs and their humans, Woof-Fest is heading back to Warrigal Run, Bungarribee Park (Blacktown) on Sunday 25 June 2017 from 9am-1pm.
  • Check out the Penguin Expedition at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium where guests can get up close and personal to a spectacular colony of King and Gentoo Penguins.

  • The Melbourne Magic Festival returns to Melbourne for it’s tenth year over the July school holidays with over 300 performances of 65 different shows including top international guest magicians from all over the world!
  • Journey into the magical world of Aardman, the acclaimed studio behind Wallace & Gromit for the new Wallace & Gromit and Friends exhibition at ACMI. Take an extraordinary trip from sketches and models through to elaborate sets as these beloved characters take shape on screen.

  • Southbank will once again be transformed into an action-packed winter playground when Eureka Skydeck present the return of the Melbourne Ice Slide for kids, parents and the whole of Melbourne to enjoy.
  • Between June 1 and August 31, families are invited to South Wharf for Skate, Slide and Chill where the Common Man lawn will be transformed into an arctic oasis complete with an undercover riverside ice rink, toboggan slide and chill out zone.
  • Celebrate the longest night of the year at the Collingwood Children’s farm with the annual Family Bonfire. Families will enjoy, food & drink stalls, a Gypsy Band and wild dancing, Huge lantern puppets and of course the Winter Solstice Bonfire.
  • Sovereign Hill celebrates its annual Christmas in July event Winter Wonderlights these school holidays.The Victorian-style buildings will come alive through the magic of large-scale light projections in the dazzling ‘Winter Wonderlights’ show.


  • Head to Victoria Harbour during Winter Solstice (20th-25th June) to see Light House; a state-of-the-art lighting installation illuminates a 15-storey residential building façade, forecasting the weather and displaying how the weather feels in a visually spectacular manner.
  • Illuminate your eyes, ears and mind at the new LightTime exhibition at Scienceworks. This interactive exhibition explores the phenomena of light and optics through the display of dynamic and arresting interactives and art-based installations.

  • Head to Melbourne’s most exciting winter family festival with snow The Big Freeze  these winter holidays under the Big Top at Fountain Gate.
  • You’re invited to the Queen Vic Market Living Science event to explore the relationships between food, science, innovation, technology and the environment. Interactive presentations, hands-on activities for adults and children, shows and demonstration run throughout the day.
  • Escape to Everywhere and head to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne during National Children’s Book Week for a story time session, dancing and singing, inspired by the special plants and magical places in Melbourne Gardens.
  • The Melbourne International Film Festival is delighted to welcome film buffs of all ages to the Australian premiere of Rock Dog for the 2017 MIFF Kids’ Gala, presented by Australia’s favourite popcorn brand, Cobs.

  • On the 29th & 30th July, over 200 buildings around Melbourne will open their doors to the public for Open House Melbourne. Bring the family and use the opportunity to explore the city you love.
  • Get your Einstein on at National Science Week! So many events happening around Melbourne for kids and families including Mixing Lab at Artplay, family science games night and The Kids Lab at the Monash University’s Open Day.
  • Families are invited to Collingwood Children’s Farm to celebrate culture at the annual NAIDOC Family Day at the Farm.   • In August, the Melbourne Writers Festival will return as Victoria’s premier annual literary event. The Festival connects writers and stories to celebrate a world of literature, explore universal ideas, and inspire a global community of readers. Stay tuned for the jam packed children’s program.
  • This winter in an Australian-first, The National Geographic Photo Ark is coming to Melbourne Zoo. This exclusive photo exhibition is using the power of photography to inspire people to save animals before it’s too late.
  • INSIDE the BRICK is coming to Fitzroy for its biggest LEGO expo of the year during the winter school holidays with their fantastic travelling Interactive Play & LEGO Model Exhibition!
  • All aboard the Snow Train bound for Mt Baw Baw this winter season. Jump aboard a vintage train and escape Melbourne for a day into the snowy mountains with the family.
  • Check out the new Vjunior Village Cinema at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre
  • Experience the latest international touring exhibition at Melbourne Museum and journey through the world of bugs as imagined by the creative team behind The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Melbourne Museum has opened the doors to the Australian premiere of Bug Lab: Little Bugs, Super Powers – an exquisitely crafted and spectacular world of bugs where museum visitors can immerse themselves in the fascinating science of entomology and learn how these little creatures have inspired cutting-edge science and technology.

  • Experience the largest Marvel exhibition ever presented in an art museum only showing at GOMA until the 3rd September 2017.
  • Bring the family along to King George Square for iceskating and winter wonderland fun at the Skating At Festival in front of Brisbane’s stunning City Hall.
  • Step back in time in the winter school holidays and head to the Kids Medieval Family Fun Week at the Abbey Museum. Try your hand at Archery, have fun dressing up in beautiful outfits from the Middle Ages and enjoy fun craft activities.

  • Discover what happens at night when the Museum closes and see the dinosaurs before they go to bed this August. Explore every nook of the Museum including Measure Island and Sciencentre, dance along with Jurassic JoeExternal , see demonstrations, amazing objects, performances, hands-on activities and more.
  • Spend a day surrounded by French Culture at the Brisbane French Festival.  For 2017, the Kid’s Corner’s theme is « The five senses » ou “Les cinq sens”. Children will be able to experience the sense through famous French children activities. From making “croissants” to listening to French stories, they’ ll be plenty for them to have fun and a good time.
  • EKKA returns in 2017 from the 11th-20th August bringing with it the best entertainment, rides, exhibitions and show bags! Held over ten full days, Ekka showcases life and achievements in the Sunshine State, bringing visitors from across Queensland and Australia to the heart of Brisbane.
  • Families are invited to get swept away in the fun, colour and excitement of the annual Redcliffe KiteFest on the last weekend in August where kites of all shapes and sizes fill the sky.

  • Join the bear hunt on Saturday, 8 July, at Doomben Racecourse’s Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Round up the kids and their best-dressed bears for a “pawfect” family day out.
  • The Moreton Bay-based Quandamooka people’s annual whale welcome blesses the arrival of “yalingbila” (humpbacks) on their migration from southern waters. You are invited to be part of the ceremony and enjoy whale-watching cultural tours, traditional dance, arts, weaving, workshops, kids’ activities, good food, sand art and other highlights.
  • On Saturday 1st July, Winter will be celebrated with the biggest bonfires, entertainment and festivities in Queensland at Sandstone Point Hotel’s Annual event, Bonfire Night. Offering Brisbane’s biggest bonfires, fire twirlers, kids rides, food stalls, live music, FIREWORKS.
  • Head to the Cobb + Co Museum on Sat 1st july for a Teddy Bears Picnic. Families are invited to bring their picnic blankets and teddies along to the Museum to join us for a fun day of games, face painting, balloon twisting, storytelling and more.
  • If you haven’t checked out the Happy Birthday Play School exhibition at the Cobb + Co Museum you only have till the 30th July to catch it. Relive your childhood and take a look through the Round, Square or Arched window and see what is under the rocket clock.


  • Be inspired by Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO® Bricks, an exhibition where architecture meets creative play at the Ipswich Art Gallery.
  • Head to the coldest place in Queensland for the Snowflakes in Stanthorpe festival. There will be plenty of frosty activities for the whole family across the three days 30th June-2nd July.

  • The Young Explorers program has been specially designed for children aged 3 to 5 years and this July children will explore what goes bump in the night.

  • Winter Wonderland returns to Glenelg. Strap on your skates and glide under SA’s first clear domed marquee on Moseley Square and this year, why not try your hand at Tobogganing down a 25m genuine ice slide. Come rain, hail or shine; morning, noon or night bring the family and skate by Adelaide’s favourite beach.
  • Science Alive! is an expo designed for children to immerse themselves in the fun and excitement of learning “why things work and do what they do”. This August get hands on with interactive workshops and shows by some very special guests.

  • The Alpine Winter Village returns to Adelaide’s Riverbank Precinct this July and transforms Torren’s Parade Ground into a magical alpine village with ice skating, Christmas Markets, live entertainment, cosy food and lots more.
  •  Pull out your woollies and prepare for a week of winter warming wonder at the Our Port Winterfest. Families will enjoy a fabulous ice-skating rink, winter markets, live music, kid’s activities, shows, workshops and more delicious winter food and drink than you can poke a stick at!
  • Nature Play SA and National Parks SA are teaming up again to bring you our hugely popular cubby building event at the Adventure Playground in Belair National Park on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 July! Nature players and their families are invited to join us for seasonal play featuring truckloads of sticks and other cubby-making materials, wattle and eucalypt crown making, bell tents for reading and loose parts play, plus as much free play as the kids can handle in the Adventure Playground and wild surrounds.

  • All Aboard…The National Railway Museum is holding the annual Family Fun Fair in July with lots of children’s entertainment, music, singing and dancing, street theatre, Aussie Wildlife tent and face painting. Plus three separate train rides all included in the cost.
  • Join the keepers at the Adelaide Zoo as they treat their zoo animals to a play day of enrichment! See how they excite them with smells and tastes, or how they solve puzzles and games.


  • Watch as art and light work to transform Brookfield Place through spectacular installations, projections, exhibitions, interactive events and performances by local, national and international artists at the Brookfield Winter Lights Festival.

  • Winterworld Australia is skating into WA for the first time and taking over the Esplanade Reserve in Fremantle from 24 June – 16 July, for 23 days of outdoor ice-skating and spectacular winter wonderland for all ages.
  • Explore the world through LEGO at the Wonders of the World LEGO® exhibition at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre!

  • Come dressed as a superhero and head to Perth Zoo for a wild adventure on Superhero SaturdaysFollow the Wildlife Superhero trail, find all the answers and help Perth Zoo save wildlife. There will also be fun activities and awesome crafts in the Wild Zone where you can even make your own Wildlife Superhero costume.
  • Voyage into a mysterious and marvellous undersea world with multi award-winning and record-breaking exhibition Voyage to the Deep at the Western Australian Maritime Museum.
  • Scitech transforms into an exclusive playground for toddlers for their Toddlerfest program. Toddlerfest is designed for 0-5 year old children and their families, and takes place twice a year with the next one scheduled for the 22nd-30th July.

  • Take some time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements at NAIDOC Week celebrations at the Perth Cultural Centre NAIDOC Community Day.

  • The crime scene is a zoo, a security guard has been shot and a prized white rhino has been stolen. Can you help solve this crime? Whodunit? is open daily in the Scitech BHP Billiton Exhibition Gallery from 15 May – 8 October.
  • Every day during Children’s Book Week (19th-25th August) join in the fun with little ones in The Story Place at the State Library of Western Australia. Enjoy big stories with your little people – read the short listed books, vote for your favourite and escape to everywhere with plenty of fun-time activities.
  • Crown Pyramid is hosting Lights by DreamWorks – The Experience until the 23rd July. Lights by DreamWorks features huge illuminated figures of those much-loved characters familiar to the fans of the Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Madagascar movies.
  • Get down to the FREE Perth Science Festival at the Perth Cultural Centre for over 40 interactive stalls, explosive science shows, native animals the list goes on!

  • Rug up and head to this year’s Winter Heat at Honeysuckle with interactive displays, delicious food, entertainment and something for the whole family.
  • The only chance you get to see snow in the Hunter Valley with Snow time in the Gardens at Hunter Valley Gardens this July! Build a snowman, ice skate, ice toboggan, join in on the snow ball challenge or enjoy the amusement rides.

  • The Newcastle International Animation Festival returns to Newcastle on the 25th-26th August. Stay tuned for the full program including a great program of kids films here soon
  • Step back in time on the 30th July at Tocal Homestead with Peek into the Past; a wonderful old fashioned day out for all the family.Grandparents will reminisce, there’s nostalgia for the parents and the children will make some very interesting discoveries about our past.
  • Get in to the winter spirit at the Wallsend Winter Fair on the 13th August. A great day out the whole family will love attracting up to 30,000 visitors throughout the day.
  • All ages are invited to attend the 2017 Hunter Science Festival on Sunday 20th August at the Newcastle Museum. Fun interactive experiences are availble that will excite, inspire, engage and wonder the entire family.
  • The Aroma Festival returns this August to tempt the tastebuds with coffee & chocolate. This year will see the return of a host of popular features and events, including coffee roasters, market stalls, children’s activities, and live entertainment.
  • Brickfest is returning to Newcastle this July with a change of venue this year moving to the Newcastle Jockey Club. This year will bring the largest city layout with new buildings plus old favourites.
